Okay guys, I'm in the market for an AK in 7.62x39mm. I'm strictly an AR guy except for the two Russian SKS I own. I have no idea when it comes to AK's and AK variants. I know the difference between stamped and milled receivers and I pretty much know which problems to look for when buying a used weapon, as far as sight cant, etc. etc.

The problem I'm having is which AK to buy!! I have a budget of around $2K MAX, although I'd like to keep it way below that. Which is why I want everyone's opinion on this forum.

So let me know what you've had, have and would like to own and why. (Besides a full auto Russian AK47 or PolyTech Legend **passed one of those up several years ago :a43::a22::a43: for a Preban Colt A2 Govt.**)

If you have a link to one for sale online, go ahead and post it so I can check it out.

Milled AK's are a little more accurate. They will cost a little more, However, it would be best to buy an American made, American barreled AK because the barrels are just better all the way around.
If you want to shoot 7.62x39.......build up an AR in that caliber. If you want the AK....buy American. They are better built. The European stuff is usually a little rough and barrels aren't as accurate.

That is quite the budget for an ak. I would reccomend an arsenal ak since your budget allows it, they are the best. If you were more constrained on a budget i would then recommend a saiga or a vepr. i know saigas are harder to find since the import ban but they are really nice once converted. I normally like to buy usa made, but that doesnt apply with aks imo. I have heard century is having qc lapses again recently, and I.O. has such a spotty track record even if they did clean up their act i would stay far away.

Veprs are nice. However they are built on the heavier RPK receiver which makes for a much more hefty gun with not that much more gained in accuracy. Kind of how a milled ak is "supposed" to be more accurate than a stamped one--the heavier gun will always likely look more accurate to the shooter if they cant control the lighter ones jump. I have been an ak only kinda guy up until 2 years or so ago when i broadened my horizons if you will. If you want a 12g ak, go vepr and dont look back. If you want a rifle, aim for an arsenal based on your budget, then saiga or vepr depending on your situation and weight/accuracy demands. My sgl-21 (saiga) will print sub 2in groups with wolf sp at 100yds, opens up to 3in with tula fmj. It regularly prints 1.5-1in groups with hornady sst if i do my part (1.5 is the norm, but still for an ak thats pretty damn good if you ask me lol). Hope this helps.

which ak variant to buy???

I didn't know if you knew this but, DDI is located in Knoxville tn. in case you wanted to keep you money in tn. I don't know those guys but I have met them before and do know one of the builders. He's good at his craft. DDI took over waffen werks seems like its been two years now. I think they make a pretty good weapon.

I swapped an AR-15 5.56 rifle for a Zastava N-PAPAK-47 a few years ago and I really love the rifle. I am going to up grade to a folding stock later this month. They run around 650.00 USD.

Man, I still want my Polytech Legend with the Box & Papers but they're so expensive!! I know exactly where one is and I've already shot it, shoots like a dream!! I recently just blew my money on a Mega Maten 308 AR, But I can always sell my FN 5.7 Pistol to go towards the purchase of a nice AK variant.

What are your thoughts on the IWI GALIL ACE?? It seems to be a legit firearm with all the kinks worked out of it. I feel it's a little steep as far as price, but.................. all guns are a little steep when we're watching are bank accounts drop a couple G's!! :a22:
