Anyone on the forum have any knowledge on what the US Army's combat experience has been so far with the 6.8x43 SPC rifle and round. Curious as to what the effective combat ranges have been based on load, barrel lengtht and twist rate. Let me know if someone here knows.

I'm sure others here are more knowledgeable than I on this, but to the best of my knowledge, the 6.8 has never been used in combat, at least not officially. Back when it was being run through the wringer by the AMU it was with the old spec chamber, and the ammo was hotter than it is today. While many recognized the potential as a 5.56 replacement, the bean counters nixed spending the money to fully develop it for military use.

If the testing then had been done with the current 6.8x43 SPC II setup with a 1:11 twist, there would have been a much better chance of getting it adopted, even if only as a special ops weapon. Ancient history, however.

Well, I am just curious, as usual, but I guess if it will DRT a 350/lb hog with one shot, on that point alone it perhaps is more than adequate for CQC and or further out. Thanks for the replys.

I heard uncomfirmed reports that they were very happy with its performance if that helps.

they were using OTM's when they were being used.

I never had the opportunity to handle the 6.8 weapons while still in (was an M24 shooter), but I did see a few folks with 6.8's that would "advise" us from time to time.

I spoke with some of my old squad mate last year that are still in and all I can say is that many have used the 6.8 over "there" with great effectiveness in the SDM role as a replacement for some of the other 7.62 platforms (they still needed folks like me with the 24 though in an over watch role) oh and yeah they were using OTM's from a small (but major) ammo maker that is know for their match ammo (hint is that they made the 77gr OTM for the 5.56). This is interesting since i know a guy that works there and called him up and he was tight lipped on if/when they were gonna come out with a commercial/civilian loading of 6.8 ..

Oh darn.. too bad you had to make due with a plain old M24. :a32:

I held a new one that came from Remington LE at an NRA show a few years ago. I put it on my wish list after the Rem Rep told me I could order one from them, scope, case, everything in one box.

Thanks for the post. It seems many ex or current service types have seen 6.8s in action, but the soldiers actually using the 6.8s have to remain silent for some reason.

I'd love for Bin Laden to take a 6.8 OTM round between the eyes. There's always hope.

when the 6.8 became my caliber of interest a little over 4 yeas ago I was reading every blog I could find on it when I came across a military forum that was discussing its use in combat. most of the posts where profanity laced so I could not copy and paste here but they sure did love it.
they were not only impressed with the better stopping power the main thing they liked was how loud it was compared to 5.56 but how it scared the crap out of the enemy

How about a link to those discussions? That way, anybody who doesn't want to see the profanity can opt out. Wouldn't bother me at all, but then I'm more interested in the data than its verbal presentation.

When I was in Afghanistan from Jan 09-Jan10 I never saw anyone using it. My unit was equipped with M14 EBRs for the squad designated marksman role. The SF and Rangers I all saw had M4s as well, no experimenting where I was.
