Tac 6

This started off as the 6x41 way back in 08 I think. I was trying to make all of the wildcats easy so everyone could use 6.8 bushing dies. After testing it just didn't perform to my expectations. The brass at 41 was just a little too long to use the 105s and cramming them down in the case used up capacity. I put it on the back burner but the upper sat in the corner of my office for years so it was a constant reminder to make me build what I thought would be the perfect tactical(DMR type) 0-600yd rifle. Over the years new powers and bullets came out. It became easier to have custom dies made in fairly large quantities. Finding the sweet spot for the start of the lands in other 6mm cartridges helped push me back into it.
The 30 Herretts performance sealed the deal. I should have made the x42 and all of the other 6.8 cats like the Herrett. At this point I believe we can use the Predator data with 1gr less powder. The 6.8 brass and bolts are stronger so we should be able to run 58k without any issues and keep the velocity close to that of the Predator.

The barrels have helical flutes
Just to make this easier to find.

Did some testing today. I am very happy with the results. This is a very accurate round. I started at 26.6gr and went up to 28. 27.8 and 28 was too hot. This was my first time trying a ladder test. I number each shot as I went. Here are my results with 8208 and CBB 92g MKZ's. This was thru a chrony at a 100y target.

Looks good, Thanks
2800 for a 95gr and 2700 for a 105 isn't bad at all out of an 18" barrel. pretty much what the 224 V is shooting 90s out of a 24" barrel.

IMO 26.4gr of 322 would be MAX @ 2723. Like I said I'm getting swipes early but 26.6 showed a curl.
I'm using a Magnetospeed
Some of the H322 loads look fast depending on pressure. looks like you need something with a touch slower burn rate than h322 but a fuzz faster than CFE if you are running out of case room before you hit pressure. 8208 is in that range, 10x, 2520, maybe AR Comp.
Thinking out loud, if I can get 2700 and good accuracy I'll call it good.

Modified case came in the mail today

My head space reading 1.308". The following lengths are from my camber to the lands

Berger 105 Hunter VLD 2.308"
Nosler 105 CC 2.356"
Hornady 103 ELDx 2.332"
Sierra 95 TMK 2.354"
CB 92 MKZ 2.248"
Barnes 85 TSX 2.230"
Sierra 85 GK HPBT 2.115"
Sierra 70 MK HPBT 2.165"

Note here, hunting bullets have the ogive in different locations over that of target. Now I feel comfortable loading and continuing testing
Right, shorter/lighter bullets have a shorter nose so the bullet has to be set deeper in the case. The full diameter part of the bullet is what dictates the possible OAL.

Those FB pages are popping up for just about every caliber. I would like to see the ARP wildcats under one FB page since it would be easier for me. I do like FB as tool for keeping up with friends from places I moved away from.

Anyway, I loaded up my first 30 TAC6 rounds. Did a ladder loads plus a bunch at 28 grs with Lever and Nosler 105 RDF bullets. Was going to range today but showers interfered. So it will be several weeks before I can make it to the range.

I'm the same way I have a personal account and a business type account.

Has anyone tried 75 gr v-max? I like to hunt coyotes and think the 85gr-58gr bullets might be ok. I wonder if the twist would shoot the lighter bullets ok? Could the Tac 6 push the 70 TNT over 3,100 fps? I am getting 3,030FPS with the 6.8 and 90gr TNT.
I have one loaded in a case but have not shot them, I'm in shooters purgatory down here. They should hit 3200 maybe even 3300. You'll have to load them very short to keep them out of the lands and enough bullet in the neck. An 8 twist will shoot them fine.

If anyone is interested I am selling my TAC6 barrel and die set for the price of the barrel alone. No rounds have gone thru the barrel and I only formed 15 pieces of brass with the die's. I jumped on the barrel/dies without really waiting and seeing what others got from the round, performance wise. I wanted a varmint oriented round but the TAC6 is geared more towards the long high BC bullets better suited to banging steel or punching paper and simply cant compete against my 18" 30 Herrett for hunting deer or even yotes. My loss is your gain!
The case was shortened so the long bullets would work at mag length but the short 75s and 80s will work just as well as the 95s. It will work good on varmints and Yotes but it does not compete with the Herret when it comes to smacking deer and hogs.

I've been using the Tipped version, there at 18/100. Tips load out to 2.010. What was the velocity with 28gr. 8208? Any cycling issues?

What I've noticed is that 27.3 8208 runs out of barrel.
With a bullet that light you could probably use a faster burning powder. I used 24-25gr 10X with 75gr bullets in the 5.56x42. And H322 worked great with 55gr bullets in the x42 at 3500fps more or less.

Sorry typo, H322. Could dial this powder for to find a node for varmints but was more interested in finding useful loads for fire forming. Also the velocity starting load was higher than what were using with H335. Could do a .2 ladder and find the flat spots.
You really don't need to fireform before using a full power load. The cases are only blown out a few thou at the shoulder. I use full power loads when sized/formed straight from 6.8 cases. I just don't mix new sized cases with once fired cases when shooting for groups.

Took Tac 6 out to 800 yds today with 105 VLD's. 29.0gr CFE 223, CCI 450's with Starline brass. Solid, first round hits all the way out once dope was situated. 500 asl, 47 deg F, 29.57 Baro., 6.7 mils. Two older fellas I was shooting with (old school reloaders) were blown away. Both said "I gotta have one of those!"
How did the brass hold up?
