If anybody is a fan of the 300 BO, I'd think they'd like the 338 ARC even more. I don't feel the need, as mine are different and satisfied with more speed than weight.

I don't know who wrote that article but the 338 spectre was based off cut down 6.8 spc brass or 10mm Magnum brass. Marty Ter Weeme designed the cartridge along with the .458 Socom

 

Agreed. .338 Spectre would be completely different than something based off a Grendel casing.

 

The 338 Grendel has been around for a long time. No one wanted it until a bit of smart marketing called it ARC. If you plan to go supersonic and hunt, then the 458 Socom is the better choice.

 

Not sure why you keep saying that. They are not the same cartridge. Similar but not the same. One is based on the 338 Lapua case, the other on the 6.5 Grendel. Pretty good bit of difference in the parent cases.

I actually already have a 450 bushmaster and it's a lot of fun. It's great for deer and pigs, maybe smaller black bear. With the 450 using pistol bullets I was looking to make a step up to something that maybe hits as hard or a little harder with better bullets for larger black bear and possibly other game no bigger than whitetail deer.

 

Have you considered 450 Bushmaster? Brass isn’t expensive and it uses .452 bullets made for 460 S&W and 454 Casull.

 

338 ARC is pretty weak supersonic.

 

338 is one of my favorite calibers although I don’t know much about the 338 ARC 😁
