Hello all, I'm new to the forums and I figured I'd drop my first post here!

I'm looking to buy a 6.8 SPC upper for hunting. (eastern whitetail deer)
1-I'd prefer a shorter barrel around 16 inches (no shorter).
2-"light weight"
3-flash hider preferable to muzzle break
4-Doesn't have to be full of rail systems but I would like the A3 so I can mount optics.
5-Iron sights are nice (I prefer fixed forward sights and flip down rear) if possible (not a issue for the most part as I can mount sights on it later if I get one with a full upper rail).
6- Spec 1 or Spec 2?

I have looked at

Daniel Defense AR-15 DDV6.8 A3 Flat-Top Upper Assembly 6.8mm Remington SPC 1 in 10" Twist 16" Barrel Chrome Lined Chrome Moly Matte with Omega X 9.0 Quad Rail Free Float Handguard, Flash Hider Pre-Ban

As well as

Noveske AR-15 Rogue Hunter A3 Flat-Top Upper Assembly 6.8mm Remington SPC 1 in 12" Twist 18" Barrel Stainless Steel w/ Troy TRX Free Float Handguard, Flash Hider

But the main items being, Light weight, 16 inch barrel quality for dollar! I believe those two manufactures have good reputations/stake their bolt carriers correctly etc??
I'm open to all suggestions.

(good places to buy are also appreciated)

Thank you for your time
Pat

Check out AR Performance.com. They have about anything you can think of and it is great quality. I am sure a lot of others will tell you the same. I don't own one, but from reading the responses of others o here I wouldn't think twice about buying one. Good luck with your new 6.8. They are a load of fun.

Both good brands that you're considering, but haven't heard much about actual experience with DD's 6.8. Noveske 6.8's are generally highly regarded. Just looking at barrel stats, Noveske's 12" twist tends to be more desirable versus DD's 10" twist. Noveske barrels are also lapped match-grade stainless.

I've used a lot of DD parts with satisfaction, but haven't tried their 6.8 barrels. So I would give the nod to Noveske for this particular cartridge.

Here's my lightweight setup, Cardinal Armory lightweight barrel, Clark carbon handguard with a low profile gas block underneath, Cav Mk2 lower, and a Weaver 1-3 scope. Just under 6 lbs.

Looking for about the same in my thread except I was leaning to a piston 6.8. I liked the LWRC the best so far. Looking at the AR Performance guns also. The 3-4 week build time is an issue though as hunting season is coming up. I think the DD guns are hard to get right now also.

Check out ARP, Bison, PSA(Palmetto), Rainier. Rainier is going to be higher but they do have some nice barrels. I had a Noveske and it shot good but I think you are paying for the name and there are better options for the money. I went with ARP and will be adding another shortly.

Bison is also a very good choice

Bison, ARP, Wilson Combat, and Noveske. All good choices and not necessarily in any order. I do own two ARPs. DD has a good reputation but their 6.8 barrel is not as good as the others listed.

I would look at Rainier Arms, they have very nice components and can build the upper how you want it pretty quickly. I'm not sure what they have for light weight options but I'm sure you'll find something you like, especially the Shilen match barrels they use.

I Really like my Noveske Rogue Hunter. It is easily the most accurate rifle I own. Fit and finish is superb. customer service is also top notch. It handles hot hand loads very well too.

I think ARP and Wilson Combat offer the lightweight thin profile affordable "hunter" barrels. I don't think you'd go wrong with either one.

Noveske is close to SPC II. Not all ARP barrels are proprietary like the ARP lightweight hunter I mentioned which is SPC II.

Biggest thing would be the chamber. The DD is a good offering also. Would just be a tad slower but has the correct chamber.

All the others listed are ideal as well. Cant go wrong with any of them.

I would sat find a lightweight upper and ten see if you could find a PlumCrazy lower. they are the same as the Cavarms. But Cavarms is no longer in business. That would probably be the lightest you could get.

Hi all, new to 6.8. I saw this was a light hunting post. i still hunt on foot and rarely from a blind so a light gun becomes a great companion. what are some of your lightest setups? I'm finding a lot of extra weight in BCG as well as barrel... any good light bcg options? BTW has anyone taken a bear with 6.8?

I have a Mega billet upper and lower which are a couple of the heaviest upper/lower combos you can have I think, but I have a 16" Bison barrel with a PRI carbon fiber handguard and a CTR stock and it's still very lightweight. If you get a lighter upper/lower combo than what I have, I think you would be quite happy with a Bison upper as it has the right specs as well as being lightweight as well as being VERY accurate. I typically shoot MOA (or maybe a little better) with both SSA 115 factory loaded ammo and Hornady 120 SST's factory loaded ammo when shooting off of a front rest at 100 yards. It is a super handy rifle that is easy to carry and has excellent accuracy. Couple it with a good sling and you should have no problems.

.50 cal! OMG, Polar bear?

I know allot of people that have killed bears and most use nothing larger than a .308, some taken with 30-30 and even a 243, unless your hunting huge grizzly or polar bears in Alaska I don't think a .50 is needed, I would use my 6.8 if given the option to take a black bear but that's just IMO based on the bears I've seen taken.
Oh geeze, I forgot about black bear! I was thinking grizzly or polar bear! My bad guys!:a42:

Check out Wilson Combat. Their Tactical Hunter Lightweight is 7 lbs and is guaranteed to shoot MOA. The rifle has the SPC II chamber and M4 feedramps, 16" barrel, Accu-Tac flash hider, Wilson TTU 3.5 lb trigger, etc. It's pricey, but it includes all the upgrades I was looking for - in a factory rifle. And Wilson is known for top-notch customer service.
