Does anybody own or have personal knowledge about a DPMS Panther LR 308-24? I am interested in knowing how the 24" stainless barrel shoots. i realize the trigger probably sucks. I searched this forum and at least one forum member believes DPMS barrels are good for tomato stakes but I have a 5.56 that shoots well. I have fondled this DPMS rifle at Cabela's and it is a heavy chunk of steel and plastic. I really want a 260 Remington AR and at < $1100, this rifle would be just a barrel away from being a .260 AR. I would think I could sell the DPMS barrel and recover some of the cost of the replacement .260 barrel. I would build the .260 AR from scratch but cannot find the necessary components in stock to build a complete AR for anywhere close to $1100.

I have no trouble keeping moa or a little less out to 500 yds. I am sure somebody better could do quite well with it. Super heavy and I only sit in a deer stand with it and shoot factory loads. Reloading could probably dial it in better. I have a JP trigger in it. It has been a great gun but might be getting phased out by a 6.8 because my deer hunting is not over 250 yds or so anyway.

I was in the same boat last year, I wanted a DPMS LR65 (Creedmoor) but none were available.

I bought a USED LR-308, you can get those for 8-9 hundred if you shop hard on the I-net and IF you are patient. Anyways buy the host chassis as cheap as possible cause the barrel/bolt is just going to be pulled and resold.

You're right you can recoup your money on the new barrel/bolt by selling the one that came with the used gun - not all of it but at least 60% of the cost will be covered.

Get a set of JP Springs for the trigger and you have yourself a DPMS in the caliber you want for right at $ 1100.00.

I wouldn't reuse the used bolt when you re-barrel - just my opinion.

I went with a Criterion barrel and it was super accurate.

Sold the gun last month, it was still too damn heavy :a23:

I love mine and its very accurate. 1/4 inch MOA with hand loaded 150 grain Pro Hunters. If you did purchase it and decided to sell the barrel, I might be interested in the barrel if the price is right. Was thinking about another project with the barrel cut down to 18 inches and treaded.

I had one and the barrel was a tent stake. (24" bull) Grouped 2-3" at 100 no matter what I fed it. I replaced the barrel and now its sub moa.

Thanks for the responses. I just hope the barrel shoots well enough to sell and recover some of the cost of a replacement. I have already ordered a new match grade BCG.
