Anyone using Accurate 5744 for the 30 Herrett AR? I have an 8# jug of it and was wondering if it would be a suitable powder. Finally put a barrel I got a number of years back from ARP on an upper.

There's a load-info thread for 30 Herrett AR.

Overall, most people use SW Blackout and other powders with similar burn rates.

I see the 85grain bullet has a load using "5447", though I can't locate that powder on the burn rate chart I'm using. Typo for 5744 perhaps?

There's a 110grain bullet load that uses Reloader 7, which on my chart is marginally faster burning than Accurate 5744.

* edit * I notice on Dan's chart below, and on a different chart I have, that Reloader 7 is quite a bit slower, and more comparable to Accurate 1680 and SW Blackout. * edit *

Seems like you should be ok to start by loading lower charges, looking for signs of pressure on the fired primers and cases as more powder gets added.

One cannot always rely on burn charts.
For instance this chart shows 2200 as faster than 4198 or 7.
Yet in the 6.8 4198 and 7 work well on 85 and 90gr, where 2200 works better on 100 to 130gr.
By this chart one would think its the opposite.

In the Tac30/30HRT CFE Black and SW Black will get more speed than 5744. Although 5744 is accurate in them.

Thanks so much. I had used 5744 for reduced loads for double rifles like the 450/400 and 470 Nitro so have some sitting on the shelf and noticed if falls right in above 1680 on the Hodgdon’s burn rate chart. I have a starting load from Quickload that I will try and report back.

Did not try any 5744 yet but did get to try the ARP 30 HRT AR I recently installed with SWBO
Garmin Chrono, 16” Bbl.
Hornady 135 FTX
3 shot groups
Starline Brass, 6.8 formed and trimmed
27 gr 2350 fps
27.5. 2410
28. 2440
28.3. 2467
28.6. 2499
28.9. 2510. Too Hot primer flatening
29.2. 2550. Too Hot

28.3 gr and 28.6 gr were the most promising with 3 shot groups below 1” at 100 yards

I think you'd have a hard time finding a cartridge that 5744 is NOT usable in. It's one of those powders that can make anything from a .22 Hornet, right up to those big bores with a dash between the numbers, go bang and push a bullet downrange. It may not be the best choice for any of those loadings in terms of energy or velocity, but you can find a load for it, and it'll work in just about anything.
