GOT OUR LEASE
had posted about a lease we were checking out just outside of Columbus...
my brother lives in Houston and me in Austin, we have been looking all year for a lease that was reasonable, year round access and mutually convenient... I know, a lot to ask

I checked the place out last weekend and my brother was in Mexico on vacation with his wife.. I was doing the scouting, discussions with the landowner, etc.. also had a buddy of mine interested in joining as it was a 3 person lease..we are family friends, have kids the same ages, etc.. good stuff

Well, we met the landowner yesterday, took my brother, dad and my buddy John to check it out..

This is the first lease I have had and it was very nice to have my dad come visit the landowner and check the place out.. having his blessing on the place is very comforting as he's WAY more experienced than I am

We always had our own leases growing up... but good old Dad set them up and I just showed up and hunted....

it's actually a little bigger than first thought and had a nice stock tank on the back of the property with lots of water... in this drought that's a GOOD sign, and there's a little creek that runs through the place

We saw deer at 4 in the afternoon, another good sign
and it's a nice mixture of thick stuff and one big open pasture about 200 yards across

he also told us we can go over to his 1200 acres along the Colardo river which is about 10 minutes away that has a bunch of Pecan bottoms and lots of hogs... So, I think we may have struck gold

Nightvision hunt:
First and foremost I want to say that these guys are truly first class.
Both in terms of as men and as a hunting guide/service
I can't stress that enough..
HIGHLY recommended...
Nighthogs.com is their website

My buddy and I get to Randy's place in Seguin about 9:45, about 15 minutes late... bad timing on my part

Well, we get setup and headout... me with Randy and my buddy John with Gerald, we were going to be checking different properties that have have heavily corned and were checking with game cameras

We drove about 10 minutes or so and as we get out you could hear the pigs
sweet!
gear up and head out, walked about 50 yards to a rise and we could see a heard of hogs marching single file across a bigfield, maybe 150 yards out..
there must have been 30 or more

due to the wind we really couldn't get in front of them and cut em off...
had I not been 15 minutes late, well... it would have been a pig massacre

the gen 3 NV goggles were awesome...
what a COOL experience

we hunted for about an hour on that place walking around and heard some splashing in a stock tank but didn't see any more

we drove to another place about 10 minutes away and got out, Randy said we were going to walk about a 150 yards along a road and just as he said there would be, we rounded a corner and there was a group out in front of a stand working a pig pipe... got setup with the shooting sticks and mounted the 44 lever action with the Gen 3 NV, watched them a few moments, there were to big ones, picked the biggest one and WACK!

down it went shot in the neck, racked another round
watched it for a few minuites and just as I thought for sure it was done, up it gets and heads off into the brush and because of the blind, I wasn't able to get off a second shot.. it went about 40 yars and we listened to it, knowing it was a good shot and let it bleed out

took a few moments to find it and it was a big pig
Randy figured about a 200lb boar, but this is the itnernet so it quickly became 225, as the night went on it grew to 275
it was a young boar in really good shape

loaded it up and headed back to Randy's place, clened it and waited on phone call from Gerald.. my buddy shot 2 and reconvered one nice 150lb sow

both of our shots ended up being a little low, as I didn't factor in that the NV scope was about 3" or so above bore centerline and the gun sighted in at 50 yards, shooting at 25-30 had the bullet probably an 1.5"
no big deal because I got it, but just didn't factor that in...

I did test my NV aimpoint micro on the 44 pistol and with the goggles it worked perfectly.. after I shot the hog we went out again I was just going to use the pistol ..

my piggie
shot on it's left side, this image shows the exit wound

great time, highly recommended operation, super nice guys
and the next day we went and checked the lease, brought dad, he blessed it and we signed the papers..
it's actually a little bigger that first though and had a nice stocktank on the place with lots of water... in this drought that's a GOOD sign, and there's a little creek that runs through the place

oh, i had it with me and that was my plan, but I felt like I was going to hurt his feelings by refusing the offer to use his gun

I don't think he would have a problem letting you use your own rifle
they were the nicest guys your could ever meet

I had my 44 S&W PC with a NV Aimpoint micro on it and we checked it out, it worked great with the NV Gen 3 goggles and at the distances we were shooting from it would have been childs play to shoot one with it

I went out with it and just the goggles after I shot my hog

Dang that's a clean looking pig you've got there.

All the pigs around here wallow in muddy stock ponds then scrub the mud into their old hides by rubbing on Mesquite trees...They look like #$$ and smell worse.
I don't even like hauling the nasty buggers in the back of my truck.

Congrats on the lease and good hunting.

yeah, it was a very, very clean pig
I had requested that from the guide, actually, it was one of my requirements :)

put the meat on ice and drained the water for 2 days
man, the ribs were delicious on the smoker last night :)
