So this is exactly what the title says. I am building a wildcat 6.8 round to hold a .224 Diam bullet for varmint that is flatter shooting. Feel free to follow this feed for updates.

So far I have gotten ahold of the reamer schematics for a custom barrel and sizing die. Case capacity should be around 36 grains of water at the rim. I am thinking of a slower burning powder used is similar rounds like Hodgodons H380 with a 40 -55 gr round.

Approx. velos out of a 22” barrel is 4000 with the 40 gr Nosler BT and 3750 with the 55 gr

This brings the question, why this round when proven rounds exits? Thanks for asking.

22-250- Not offered in AR-15. It’s as simple as that. I love the 22-250 AI as I can push a 80 gr bullet 3800 fps but it doesn’t offer as fast of a follow up shot when callin in doubles or triples on coyote

.223/5.56-this is tried and true round but in some cases I want to have more terminal balistics past 400 yards which is where this round gets iffy.

22 nosler- Brass. That’s just about it. I have heard some reports the brass has been fixed but I was leery about it and to have a custom barrel made with an extended gas system would add 2 lbs to my build

22 Creedmore- Same issue as the 22-250. It’s in an AR-10 platform which would add too much weight when tracking into calling spots and deer blinds.

The 22 PDK, as far as I can tell, hasn’t been made or used in about 9-14 years (only forums I found) it seems like a nasty varmit round that can approach 22-250 numbers in an AR platform. I am having trouble finding barrel blanks haven’t decided which one I wanted to go with. I will be going with a Wilson Combat BCG and Geissele SSAE trigger. I will upload the Reamer Schematic with this forum as well

Understood. Seems like a nice project. Similar to the dti / pdk concept. Unfortunately lots of the push for improvement on the 68 variants stopped with the release of the valk and the nos options. I like the wildcats, but many will be satisfied with the off the shelf items.

You should have a good shooter pushing the 55s with the 24" tube. I have found good groups with most all projectile weights for .224, but eventually I settled in on using the 75 / 80 gr for most use.

I appreciate that SMLBass but I have done some trigonometry and some algebra and I have made an even better wildcat. The shoulder is blown to 40 degrees and will hold 3 grains more powder and will push a 50 gr BT 400 fps faster than the 22 PDK. I am working on getting a reamer and barrel build and should have chrono numbers within the next 1-2 months. My plan is to push a 55 grain bullet 4000 fps which looks like is possible with an adjustable gas block and heavy buffer set up. I Will be running a 24" barrel with a can. I expect this to be a nasty varmint and whitetail deer round

Olympic built a 22-250 in an AR

Not sure you couldnt do that yourself with window mags, as several on here load 6.8 with window mags to the same OAL as the 22-250 (2.35") You may need a custom bolt is the only issue but thats easily resolved. A 458 socom bolt may work for this as they have the same rim dia

thats a good idea. But I already commited to wildcatting the 6.8. On the new data I should be pushing a 55 gr bullet 4000 fps
