Where To Find Fema Trailers?

583 Views 16 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  crayj
here is our scheme; a couple of us want to buy a few acres and get a couple of fema surplus trailers. park them side by side with about 14' between them, build a long room connecting the 2 trailers and cover all of it with a good tin roof. only problem is finding the trailers, unless they've sold them all every link i search is a loop back to the same place with no trailers listed. anyone know of auctions or places to buy the surplus trailers that were not good enough for the upscale katrina folks to live in? we're in central oklahoma so the south and southeast of us is not out of question for transport. any link to actual sale sites or info would be appreciated.

I've seen them for sale 2 or 3 at a time from individuals around here that bought them at GSA Auctions to resell them but not in a few years.
I checked into a few years ago and even then almost all of them were gone and the remaining ones were nearly toxic waste dumps. Apparently the people they were GIVEN to, didn't feel like they needed to take care of something they didn't pay for. There was also an issue of at least some of them having actual toxic materials in them and they had to be destroyed.
used to be 1000's of them staged in southern arkansas that were never used, same in mississippi too. may be too late to go that route, but there are still some buys out there for what we want to do
They moved a bunch out here to Cali a few years ago when we got destroyed by multiple forest fires. Have not seen any for auction out here yet
Sounds like a good plan. Can't wait to see the project progress
308 uppers are the inside secret?????

Ha...thats pretty funny...the old "cut/paste" didn't paste the right link .... I found an article all about the katrina trailers

Most had formaldehyde levels 8x or more the max level due to improperly cured plywood (iirc)
For years they were not allowed to be sold (until 2010 due to a court order from the class action lawsuit), then they were transferred and sold as scrap with the condition they were only supposed to be used for storage, not human inhabitation --- they had warning stickers on the windows---- of course, the stickers have mostly been removed so therefor you usually won't see them advertised as "fema" trailers anymore as they either had to be sold under the "not to be inhabited" signed contract or they have to be tested and cleansed of all toxic materials. Lots of them had "biohazards" or mold from katrina in them also.

Originally, when they were sold off in bulk, because they were "toxic" they were sold at 8% of their original value. If you find them now- they have usually been marked back up for huge profits. The article also listed details of where the trailers had been sold in the past...most were in the south west quadrant of the U.S.

When the government sells the trailers at auction, they do so in "non-public" auctions--- large companies buy them in bulk for about $900 per unit and they are usually sold as "scrap" for liability issues. When the 2005-06 trailers were first made, the formaldehyde levels were in the 100ppb level, cdc sets the "safe" level at 8ppb. Back in 2015 these trailers were still testing at 20-30 ppb so in theory they still are not safe to live in.

I don't think crayj was planning on living in one full time so most likely it's not a health issue--- but it's a huge scam on the sellers part most of the time as they buy them for about $1000 and resell them for 5-10x the amount or more with often times no info on what they are selling. My suggestion is to test them for formaldehyde levels if you plan on living in one-- test kits are about $35 each.

By the way- the slick side 308 upper link was for Woody in a different thread--its funny you were the 1st one to notice.

There used to be a huge lot of them below Meridian Mississippi. The smell of formaldehyde was so strong you had to roll up the windows driving by on the interstate.
On a traffic stop today, the gentleman I had stopped told me there are still a lot of them in Hope, Arkansas and somewhere in Louisiana (he's from Louisiana)

He told me they can't get rid of them. He explained what's left are all messed up on the inside and of very bad repair, leaking roofs, rotted floors and the toxic fumes are terrible inside them

yeah, that's been considered, just have to find where they sell them LOL and how much it cost to move them
I found a local container retailer by using Google
25'ers were $1650 delivered
40'ers were $2000 delivered
Discounts for multiple boxes

Delivery was via roll off trailer within 100 miles.

Look on ebay, they have 1000's of them all over the country, in various sizes and they are much more secure than a trailer.
there is a dealer here off of I-35 that sells them
