What is your ammo price threshold?

At what maximum price will you purchase new (not reman)M193 or M855 5.56 ammo?
I remember buying 820rnd cans for $99 back in the 90s...those days are long gone. Now I look at the the prices and I'm thinking WTF? A long time friend called 2 years ago and said he could get all the 855 we wanted for $375/1000 and I passed on it.
Wolf/Tula are kinda iffy/bottom line for me, some rifles will shoot it some will not, PPU is pretty close just because of the power level or cycle reliability.
I have some Malaysian from the 90s and it's great compared to wolf and PPU.
So at what price will you start buying again?
Inexpensive brands you like?

For 5.56, I'm going with around $350 a thousand. However, I don't expect to see that price for a while. My "solution" which isn't really a solution is to not shoot as much.

I don't have a cheap brand I like.

I never really have bought in bulk. Im relatively new to the whole firearms bug. I mostly buy components and load my own now. I normally only keep enough loaded ammo to fill my mags.
PMC-X seems to be about the cheapest on most of the list-ammo seek or gun bot. I've never tried it.
PMC X is ok, IMI too. 400 with shipping is the top end for me.
Target Sport has these.

I have a decent amount stored away so am generally just replacing what i shoot at whatever the price is, but haven't been shooting much. Generally waiting for things to get below 40cpr for the 55 gr stuff, but am OK paying a bit more for good, uncrimped brass.

I've actually been happy with the PPU stuff. It is a .223 load, though, not a 5.56, but is fine for plinking and I like the brass for reloading. Never had any cycling issues. I'd say if your carbine has trouble running commercial 223 loads you've probably "tuned" it into too tight of a performance envelope.

The Wolf brass cased stuff that is actually Taiwan (I think?) mil-surp is great.

Norma has been selling 5.56 in 30rd boxes direct off their website for decent prices / sales. Good ammo.

I won't buy any more green tip. And, as much as I hate to say, I just don't like Federal ammo except maybe the match ammo.

I tune/drill all gas ports so they run correctly with M193 and M855 ammo. Over-gassed rifles are not as accurate and since I don't like the low powered/slow PPU the barrels work well for me, don't have customers complaining about barrels not cycling so it must be okay with them too.
I have shot a bunch of PMC 855 and find it to be every bit as good as US M855. I think its even a little hotter. Its just as accurate.

I've been using armscor 62gr for training, pretty accurate and no malfunctions so far, through 2 classes and a few range sessions with my wife and I. 40 cents a pop right now, which is a decently competitive price for 223 or 556.

Im usually picking it on quality. If buying practice ammo then PMC level has always worked. If i trip across Wolf Gold then OK if its the only option. The other Wolfs or foreign I would try to stay away from just because they are dirty and IM usually running suppressed making things worse. that said if its whats available. Im shooting it.

As for higher end. It would depend on what the purpose is.
I have no issue buying BH if Im using it for something more than plinking.

Hi H!! How have you been?

Seems like PMC and IMI is going for around 45 cents, I wonder if it will get back down to 35 or is 45+ the new normal?

Hey James, things are good other than getting older and slower by the minute. The fact I can now use the term "island time" as an excuse isn't helping. Are you still competing?

I am. But no longer in 3 gun. I’m too fat and slow for that now.

I shoot PRS and looking to break into ELR in the next year. But that truly is a rich man’s game.

Are you still down in south Florida?
