I have a DPMS 308 stripped lower and upper receiver. What would be the best caliber for a multipurpose rifle with a 20 inch barrel. By multipurpose I mean precision shooting and self defense.

I reload, so ammo availabilty is not an issue.

I'm thinking 308, 260 or the 6.5 Creedmor.

Thanks

For self defense I would consider something that would not shoot through as easily as .308, and beyond that I don't know how to build a precision .308 that is light enough or maneuverable enough for SD. Not sure about those other calibers you listed.

I would go with a 7-08 since you don;t mind relaoding but honestly if you want it for defense as well then th 308 is probably your best best given the combo of uses you have stated. You can use th 110 gr 308s for HD and they will not over penetrate based on what HRdy has stated and they you can go to the 155s for LR precision stuff or the 175s. This also lets you have access to factory ammo if need.
