I have never really cared about putting either a vertical grip or a flash light on my AR type rifles but I think I will for my Extreme build. So talk to me about good grips and lights.

I looked at a Tango Down grip that I really liked but it was green and I want it in black. The grip seemed solid and I liked the way it mounted to the rail. I used to have a grip that constantly came loose but the TG had a different mounting set up.

Also whats good for a light option? LED or standard bulb? Pressure pad or thumb button? Brand?

Thanks for your help.

There are a ton of ways of setting one up. Here are a couple of ways of setting up a weapon Light:

1. No VFG. Weaponlight with a cord that you can tape onto a Tangodown railcover with built in cord slot.
2. No VFG. Weaponlight without a cord. Thumb is used to activate the Weaponlight.
3. VFG. Weaponlight with a cord that attaches to the VFG.
4. VFG. Weaponlight without a cord. This is best used with an offset weaponight mount so that the weaponlight can be easily activated by using the thumb.

Which style do you prefer?

I have not recieved my xtreme upper from ar15 performance but I do already have a MAKO forward grip that has finger grooves and mounts very sturdy. This combo also has a trigger and a hole for up to a 1" flashlight. You can use the trigger on the forward grip to activate the tailcap switch on the light. I really liked it when I had it mounted on my mini 14 Tapco stock and can't wait to set it back up on my AR15 6.8.

As far as light recommendations...I can't speak highly enough of the hop-up Cree LED lamp assy that TNVC (site sponsor) sells for the Surefire lights. 230+ lumens with the best beam pattern I've ever seen. You will NOT be dissapointed. If you've already got one of the Surefire models that work with the lamp assy it would be a no brainer upgrade.

You may want to check out the GRIP POD its a vertical grip with a bulit in bi-pod. You can find some pretty good deals on these on ebay, I found one for 45 bucks brand new included shipping. (it wasn't a knockoff) also M>S>R>P> is 160.00

I am using a black Tango Down QD, with the pocket for an Insight Technologies remote pressure switch, with a Insight Technologies M6X mounted forward on the bottom rail. Works good for me.

I had a CAA FGA and used a Inova T3 with it. It was okay but it did not secure as tightly as I would have liked it too. Any hard bumps it would have moved.

I tried a couple of vertical grips as well as a "magwell grip"... the magwell grip sucks becuase it doesnt fit right on my billet lower and its taking a serious hack job to get it right. I am going to move to a stubby style foregrip or something else that will allow a modified magwell hold... I only need it as a reference point for my non firing hand... I shoot both left and right so I run an INSIGHT M6X on the 6 oclock rail so I can activate it from either side. I opted for the more universal model that has press tabs to release it so I can run it on my primary and secondary rig depending on the situation.
I negated the whole idea that vertical grips are for gripping and I tend to stay away from anything that looks like it needs to be choke gripped.
I also dont like all the wires and tabs and pressure switches...I just want to be able to flick a tab on or have the ability to pulse it if need be... I also am not into the separate lights and lasers...I like everything to be included in one unit although the m6x has an IR filter for the light...I would need a separate IR designation unit.

At first, I was very hesitant of getting a vertical grip. Not until my friend gave me a broken legged grippod did I realize how useful the VG was...for me anyway. I love the VGs I have now and will continue to put one on every AR I get.

That being said, I don't choke the grip and find that to be an extremely awkward way of holding the rifle. I like to bridge my hand between the grip and the forearm. IMO, it is much more comfortable that way and allows me to control the firearm easier.

Yah...I find myself not actually gripping the VFG rather putting the palm pad in the crook between the attachment point and the handguard... I grip the handguard and push into the VFG keeping my thumb forward along the rail and above the barrel.

I have no idea what you want but I will quote you just to keep the image in the sig line alive.

DAMN that is nice. WOOHOOO.

BUt seriously I have used the VTAC mount with a 6P LED succesfully and expediently so hopefully that helps. I will upgrade to a LARUE just because it is a nice design and with a clicker will work well.

Still the picis nice. For us oldhorny dogs;)

If you end up going with the TD grip, make sure to get the QD version. I got the regular one, that was all the shop had, and it is a son of a biscuit to get on. I can't even imagine how hard it is to take off. It is very hard to get the cross bars to line up exactly right with the slots on the picatinny rail. Once you go to far past the spot you want it, you will more than likely not get it back to that spot

Another option is Troy's new VG. I just picked one up for my next rifle. It is pretty neat, you can either use it in regular length or stubby length. Also, it gives you the option of securing it with a regular screwdriver attachment or a thumb screw attachment. It cost about the same price as the TD.

Here is a little trick to remove and put on the regular TD VFG:

To put it on:
1. Put the AR verticall on the ground (on the stock), with the muzzle pointing up.
2. Put the VFG on the rail and using both hands, pull back on the tabs with both handsand slide the VFG down on the rail.

To take it off:
1. Put the AR verticall on the ground (on the muzzle), with the muzzle pointing down.
2. Grab the VFG and pull down on the tabs with both hands and slide it off.

It is easier if you have someone to help ou hold the AR, but it is not necessary.

Surefire makes some of the best lights.
Do you think they are worth $250 (for the X300) or $450 (for the X400)?

That just seems like a ton of money, but I like having the best... that's why I have a 6.8.

Are they worth it? Yes. Would I buy one? No. There are more affordable options out there such as the Surefire G2 lights.
