Went out Saturday night for the first time in a while and after sitting in a blind for four hours without seeing anything, I decided to call it a night. On the way back to the truck, I spotted some hogs in one of the pastures I had to go through. Because of the bright moon I had to stay along the edge and try to stay in the shadows of the trees while I attempted to close the distance. I managed to get within 75 yards and decided I had better take the shot before they went through a fence and into the woods. There were five in the group and the first one dropped DRT. I shot one that went left and that looked like it dropped. I then went for the ones that went right and hit another one. I looked back at the one that went left and saw him and another one coming right at me at about half the distance. I dropped the closest one and turned on the one that was with him and dropped him. I went back to the second one at the fence line that was making a lot of noise and finished him off. By then, I could hear the one near me that I thought went down and discovered he had closed to within 15 yds and was still trying to come at me. He got a couple more rounds to finish him off. I took inventory of the field and identified 4 bodies that looked to be done for and headed back to get the UTV. When I got back to drag the corpses to the bone pit, I could only find 3. One had gotten up and left the area. I'm sure he didn't make it far. Ended up with three out of five and possibly 2 wounded and hurting really bad. It turned out to be a good night after all.

Talked to the LO today and found out that he found a 4th hog down the next day. Brings the total to 4 out of the five I counted in the field before the shooting started. I think the 5th one is hurting a little too. Really sucks not having the video to review to see what I actually did.

Almost like the song, but in this case 4 out of 5 isn't bad! Good shooting! What rounds were you using?

Hornady 120 gr SST. That's my "go to" hog round. Anything is good for the first shot, but when they start running, the SST does a great job of slowing/stopping them.

What length barrel did you use? What velocity were you getting from that barrel? Sorry to bother you with the questions. Trying to get a good idea if I use them in my rifle.

That is the ARP 6.8 Members Only spiral fluted 18" 3R barrel. I thought I had checked the velocity when I first finished the build, but looking back through my notes I can't find where I checked it. Sorry. I would like to know what it is also, just for grins. Whatever it is, it is still very effective and stopping some tough critters. I don't use that bullet for deer because of the large amount of meat damage, but they do kill effectively.

Thanks for the update. I've heard that about that round being hard on the deer meat. Just wondering about the rest of the info that you just gave. Now I know. Thanks

Was doing some load testing this week so I checked my 18" Members barrel velocity with the Hornady 120 gr SST. Temps were 80 and a three shot group averaged 2514 fps. By comparison, the same ammo got a three shot average of 2441 fps out of my 16" ARP 5R 1/11.25.
