I believe Cold's meaning was that he has fixed the problem already so there's nothing to do... ETA - Correction -> Not Cold, whoever the web master is, I don't think Cold has ever mentioned her name, at least not that I can recall...

Yeah, agreed. Several days of public view is kind of a nice teaser, though, so maybe the site's attracted some lurkers and thus potential members since the new site's been up. Maybe a Sticky or global announcement could go up for a day or so before it goes members-only again?

It's trivial to change the settings to that, but in light of the problems with emails and registering w/ vbulletin on this server, it probably makes/made sense to have the forum public.
Obviously, most forums are public because it helps increase traffic because 1) the database is cataloged by search engines, and 2) you don't lose the people who can't be bothered to register.
Honestly I think that keeping out the people who cant be bothered to register has helped keep the site what it is. For the most part we have virtually no drama here and an unusual amount of camaraderie for the size of the site. call me what you will but if you cant be bothered to register then maybe you neednt bother to enter the site.

+1, I didn't much care for the closed nature of the forum at first but it seems to have worked. It's probably slowed down the growth some but I think the forum probably was getting a higher proportion of seriously interested users rather than browsers.

Just a clarification - the only part of the forum that is "team only" is the "68Forums.com Team Member Forum" board. The rest of the forum is open to public view and can be posted in by any person who registers for an account. Even then, they can't see this "Team Forum" unless they pony up the $5 to be "team members"
