The Return of the Violin Case?

Remember the good ol' days when you could have a surprise in a violin case?

These days, such surprises have travel restrictions/rules which apply. The pulls lock into the mechanism. Imagine the look of surprise when your local/friendly TSA representative lifts the lid.

The ability to make music is always something to put a smile on one's mug. No, it's not a "shotgun". No, it's not SBS. No, it's not a handgun. It's a "Firearm" and does NOT fall into the category of NFA rules. It IS, however, based upon a Mossberg 590 action. And, is sold over the counter at one's LGS.

What I find so appealing here is the ability to utilize those 1 3/4" shorty shells for home defense. They come in Slug, as well as Buck and Shot offerings. Suddenly, the side saddle now holds 12, not just 6 noise makers. However, you're not limited to those, it's capable of gobbling up 2 3/4" and 3" loads as well.

A flashlight with pressure switch for night time needs, as well as a Crimson Trace option. The Mossberg can also be enhanced with a rubber insert from the underside of the action to make feeding it 1 3/4" reliable. No tools needed to insert/remove either.

What? It has a basement too??? Yes indeed, it does, as well as spare feed for those basement dwellers. That larger pocket is also a handy place to store spare batteries for one's Crimson Trace habits, as well as an Altoids tin with needed allen wrenches and such.

Amazon, believe it or not. The case, that is.
"But wait, there's more! Ratdog is here to introduce the Sham-Wow V2.0xyclean!"

I had forgotten all about the Violin case. I guess it's better to be an out of work musician than a working Mariachi.

The mini rounds work very well in my keltec and they carry a good punch with very little recoil. Now I am tempted by a 590!

The amusing part of that is, some unknowing schmuck might throw their back out thinking they're fixing to sling a violin across the span onto a conveyor belt. That thing's heavy NOW, imagine if all of those 12 ga holes for ammo were full too? I'd begin to wonder if the handle was stout enough.

I couldn't care less whether it's TSA approved or not, I wouldn't use that for checked luggage anyhow.

I like the minis for an urban home-defense loading. If I'm tripping along through the woods in bear country, gimme 3" magnum 1 oz Brenneke slugs, and 3" magnum 00 Buck alternating in the tube.
I am old enuf to not go traipsing thru bear country unless teddy's have been awarded a homeland in California. Otherwise, I agree with you 👍

Back in the day when I was a Bear Guard in the Alaskan Arctic, our Remington 870 carried the Brenneke slugs. Never tested them out on a bear, but popping a cap on a Polar Bear would be more paperwork than popping a cap on a tweaker. LOL

I spent my 19th winter on the far north pack ice, Polar Bears definitely caused a primal reaction. Do paperwork or be PB scat? We only saw 3, we were probably to far north for them, but we practiced the observation and skedaddle drill. 🤣

It's crazy how dominant they are. I had a HUGE boar standing on a sand bar approx. 200 yards away from me, 200 yards' worth of Arctic Ocean between us. I was literally standing next to my 4x4 work rig (engine running, door open), with a loaded 12 ga. in hand. I had just gotten him to veer off and swim away from our work island and he came up out of the water onto the sand bar. He just stood there, eyes locked with mine, and I felt very insignificant and intimidated. Even with the safety of my rig, all that water between us, and my loaded shotgun in hand. 1,200 lbs of Polar Bear, in it's natural environment is a sight to behold while breathing the very same air as him.

That was about 150 miles east of Pt. Barrow, just over a decade ago.

We never had them get that close, but they sure had us looking all the time.

One winter, while construction of an Ice Road to our drilling island was happening, a group of folks inspecting matters went out on snowmobile. For some reason they opted to NOT have a Bear Guard along. They chose to park the machines and walk along inspecting. Before they knew it, they were maybe 50 yards away from a Polar Bear that was pawing at and swiping at the ice and staring intently at them. There they were, on foot, no weapons, and very far away from their snowmobiles. They got lucky and the bear moved on without attacking them.

Hey, Strawdawg,
Those minis work perfectly fine in my 590. I’ve only put about 100 rounds of those through mine, to date, but before that, I practiced cycling them, just to see if I could get a failure to feed. I estimate about 250 cycles total, with 0 misfeeds thus far.
