Swine Flu is spread airborne from human to human like any influenza and there is no risk from eating pork if cooked properly (despite several European countries having banned some North American pork). What is not clear is the risk from hunting wild pig or field dressing/processing the meat. I would hate to bring something so dangerous home from my first Hog hunt. Anyone have insights on the Swine Flu and if it brings any additional risk to Hog hunting?

Doing some reading up on this thing. It seems the only thing you can really do is make sure the herd you're hunting doesn't look sickly (or rather that all of them are healthy, as it takes a village to raise a nut). It seems you can't get it from properly cooked pork, and the strain that has people in a route is an uncommon strain (or really a new mutation).

I think (warning, it's an opinion) that the most risk you'd be in is if you were a pig farmer in Cali.

Agreed.

We will simply have to wait and see where this bout of Swine Flu goes, but as far as hogs go, it is always well to take precautions when handling them.

Some diseases they carry are transferable to humans, others not.

Wild Hog Diseases:

Swine Brucellosis
Pseudorabies
Leptospirosis
Tuberculosis
Tulerimia
Trichinosis
Plague
Anthrax
Foot and Mouth
African Swine Fever
Hog Cholera
Swine Vesicular Disease

Parasites:

Hog Lice
Fleas
Ticks
Roundworms
Liver Flukes
Kidney Worms
Lung Worms
Stomach Worms
Whipworms
