Since the MUR's, Sun Devil and Larue M4 uppers are out of the inventory, what upper do I want for my 18" 6.8 build? Seeking beefiest upper for accuracy. What else should be on my list and why? Any idea where to get one of the above or any suggestion you can come up with?

Thanks

Regular CMT or similar MILSPEC M4 flat top upper works surprisingly well and has for years. Spend the money buying the best barrel you can.

BCM provided me with a fine one for my business 5.56. I am in love with my SD lower on a that BCM carbine rig. Snob factor in me thinks I need to have something fancy in my upper. There must be something to the extra rigidity offered by the MUR and Larue. Thoughts, or am I just showing that I grew up in N Dallas and I am in fact an aristocrat?

Firebird upper and matched lower.
Best out there as determined by a group of people who shoot far more then the laying share of people on this site.

Google it, a guy named Jim makes em.

IIRC Jim was going to make another run of the receivers. Fit on them is near perfect. As H said they are heavy. Waiting on a barrel to put mine together. Firebird also has some cast ones that are nice but not in the same class as the billet IMO. (I have both)

Thanks Ddriller. How much does their billet upper weigh? For that matter, how much does a USGI aluminum upper weigh? What is the difference in weight? Know where I can buy one of these billet varieties, or is the market waiting on the second run you mentioned?

With respect to weight, there is usually a trade off.

A rather well known competitive shooter said (and im paraphrasing) when someone complains about the weight of a rifle (in the AR15 platform) I tell them to hit the gym.

I've not found too many an AR 15 I would consider heavy. But thats just me, for something which you feel needs a super stiff upper rec, well I assume your not going to be extremely mobile, or at least in a constant state of movement. If that is to be the case, then a firebird may not be for you.

Cold - Weight is unimportant. By the time a 14" rifle rail meets a med profile barrel, 25 rounds, a fat scope, et. al, what does the weight matter. This rig will not be a mobile, tactical type. That category is covered in my locker.

If the weight is a few oz. more, as the Larue is only 1 oz more than a standard USGI upper, no issue at all. If it's a full 6-12 oz. greater then I would really have to be convinced to go with Firebird.

If the weight is incrementally insignifigant, the Firebird will improve my tacticool, snob, and perceived rigidity importance factors. If all the big boys believe that extra rigidity adds to accuracy, Firebird seems to fit the bill if it truly is beefier in all the right places for all the right reasons. If I am incorrect, please correct my theorem.

If you guys that know more about Firebird can help me from making a mistake when ordering, I will go ahead and be the forum G Pig if I can get them to sell me one. (This assumes theyare not $250+) What I could use advice in ordering was I did not know they offered 2 different types of uppers. I now know I need to ask for the billet one. Already have an email into them so we will see if they will dance.

Sign at Shoal Creek Saloon in Austin says "Life is too short to live in Dallas Texas." I think it's Shoal Creek anyway. Just make sure you don't park your truck in front of your house in HP. If I remember correctly, that is a direct violation of your HOA. HOA also has a brig to stick Dissident Aggressors in UP. No guns allowed on Purdue.

Don't know if that is true. there is no HOA that I know of. We sure haven't signed up for any. And from driving down all the streets there if they ticket for vehicles on the street then they had better get busy. Because there is a lot.

I would also like to find out more of the Phoenix stuff. Signed up for the registration on thier website but it is still new and doesn't show anything.
I saw a few other places that have the lowers on sale. The ones marked STI-something. there about $139-$169. but it is just for the stripped lower. Does anyone have any other links?

I have been running around that area for a lot of years. Met the wife when she still lived in HP. Our mortgage broker says we should be buying lottory tickets right now because we are the luckiest sob's he has met. Sold our house in Forest hills for double what we paid when the market was in the nose dive and then find this house which is a steal. Cheapest house in one of the nicest blocks. Following my wife's grandfathers advice. He did well also;)

Thanks Art.

Glad you made a transaction that allows you to buy more rifles James!
Appreciate it. But the wife has already broken out the pottery barn catalogs and I think I am screwed.

Still would like to find some more info out and opinions of anyone who has these receivers.
