[EnforceTac 2023] The New Lightweight Piston-Operated Steyr DMR
Steyr has announced their latest upcoming non-bullpup rifle - the new Steyr DMR. A new sub-7 pound sub-MOA rifle chambered in .308.www.thefirearmblog.com
Yeah the spear is a beefy boy.One that is strong enough to handle the 277 Fury and meant more as a military rifle.
The Sig Spear weighs 9.2lbs
My father's version went a lil different.Necessity may be the mother of invention but competition is surely the daddy....
Sounds good. Military tough, piston driven, and under 7 lbs. That's only 1 lb more than the 18" lightweight 308 AR I'm working on now. It's going to be under 6 lbs.OH yeah 7lbs!!

I plan on doing a suppressor for my sfar, I will let you know. The spear is designed to use a suppressor.I wonder how the recoil is on these compared to the M7 (MCX Spear) being lightweight. Comp's are no good for military applications except for daytime use under open conditions. The Russians in the Ukraine don't even fight at night, they dig in and wait until day which is a huge disadvantage. 1. They have no optics on most of their rifles and black iron sights at night.....no bueno. 2. They have compensators as the standard muzzle device on the AK-74M's (I started out with long guns with an Arsenal SGL-31 in 5.45x39mm back when they were $800 and 5.45 was $150 for a 1,080rd spam can) which act like a giant "Shoot Here" sign as night.
Without using a compensator, an small frame AR-15 in .308 or lightweight AR-10 in .308 is going to be quite jumpy and not fast on follow ups. So while I think they might make a great SHTF gun where you might be willing to trade off massive flash and blast while trekking the mountains or plains in a post-apocalyptic nightmare (and due to .308's widespread use and capabilities), I think for US military use it's problematic and maybe the spear's porkiness is part of the equation.
For the weight sure. I still think the 6.8x51 was something they were trying to push the envelope with to see what was possible. Heck they made a Dillon mini gun chambered in .338 normaIs it just me, or is the DMR, SFAR and other similar lightweight AR-10's what the M7 SHOULD have been? While that 7lbs does not include a suppressor, even with a suppressor it's an 8lb gun (unloaded, no sights) vs. the M7 or AR-10 at 8.3lbs without a suppressor and just an empty mag.
7lbs or just under (stripped weight) is the sweet spot for full powered battle rifles, otherwise they just become pigs and slow you down. But there is still the ammo deficit.
For CQC out to 300, I'd still take 6.8 SPC due to it's capacity / low recoil. For anything beyond that, I would agree the bigger cartridges really shine.
Yeah, the Grendel forum tries to claim everything related to 6.5mm or anything made on a Grendel case, ARC, whatever. Odd, they only have 14000 members. The good thing about 68forums is we can just switch to 6.8x51 right?
Shhhh...they will never know! The good thing about 68forums is we can just switch to 6.8x51 right?
