Does anyone have an opinion about LPKs? I note that the DPMS kit is finally available but also, for a few dollars more, AIMsurplus has an LPK with a stainless steel hammer, trigger, and disconnector [whether that's a good thing or not is another question].

Also, does anyone know if all the standard hammers and triggers out there are only surface-hardened, or are they hardened deeply enough to withstand judicious stoning?

Any thoughts on this are welcome. I'm tempted to start another build.

All the better triggers I have ever worked with have sufficient hardness depth to allow stoning without a problem. Some are heat treated, some induction hardened and some just carburized.

Most are typically surface hardened and the hardness depth is at least .005"-.010"....and you won't remove that much material just stoning or polishing the engagement surfaces.

However, I have run into some cheap triggers that had NO surface hardening and were junk...so check the trigger first. Take a VERY fine jeweler's file and run lightly across the SIDE edge of the engagement surface. If the file slides across the edge without any tendency to remove material it is heat treated. If the file tries to remove material...it is soft and a poor candidate for long term reliable use.

BTW, for those with the ability to buy from Brownell's as a C&R or LEO....they have DPMS LPK's in stock for $54.
