Ok guys I ordered a stripped lower from Spikes. I was thinking of building an AR pistol but decided to put that on hold for a while. I think this build I am going to go for a 6.8 build but had some questions. How come mostly everyone uses 16" barrels. Both my other rifles are 16" one is a carbine and the other is a midlength. I was thinking more along the lines of an 18" or 20". Will those two lengths work for this round? Who has barrels in stock? Also I built the one upper already(7.62x39) is there any difference with this upper? Is the build the same? What twist do you guys recommend for an all around barrel? I know I have more questions but just can't think of them right now so that is all for right now.

Other folks will come in here and give you the run down as well, but here's my take on it. This calibre is very efficient in short barrels and 16" is the shortest barrel you can have without red tape. Unless you plan to do something specific with the rifle, 16" should be good and it allows a more maneuverable package. If you are going 18-20", you'll not see much gains in velocity depending on what loading you use (between 50-150fps in the 4" there normally). For an all purpose, I think 11-12 twist is perfect and most barrel manufacturers are moved to that area already.

If you are planning to shoot to the limits of the cartridge, though (distance), I may suggest a 20" (or longer, but I see no gains past 24", and they get less handy fast past 20") with 12 twist rifling with as large a ration between bore and groove as you can find (as that would allow for the least pressures and you could push the round harder). On those lines, ARP and Noveske both have barrels up that alley, but they're both stainless steel.

I understand the 6.8 to be a very efficient burner of the good to go powders so there will not be a signifigant increase in velocity as you increase barrell length over the 16" mark.

FWIW I have a 16, 18, 20. The 18" H-Bar is my fav.

So this round is better suited in 16" midlength? Another question I had is why most guys use 2 stage triggers? Is there an advantage to it? Who makes the best barrels without killing my wallet? Thank you guys for the info so far.

Midlength is the way to go, less gas port erosion and a smoother shot, 2 stage trigger will make you a better shot as where single stage triggers are usually gritty feeling and inconsistent (unless you send your trigger to Bill Springfield) For around $30 he can set you up a nice trigger, for the barrel go with the Extreme from AR Performance or Titan Armory, best barrel for the buck, best specs around.

I like the two stage triggers on rifles with pistol grips, but that's not the end all be all. There are some very nice single stage triggers out there for ARs and the best thing would be to try them both out and see which one suits your tastes better.
