I would definitely zero both at the same range.

Most people like the 50 yard zero while some like the 100 yard zero. As long as you know the trajectories for both, it doesn't really matter.

I zero everything at 100 yards because I rather just deal with holdovers.

Sight it in at 50 yards which will put a 5.56 about 1-1.5" high at 100 and then almost dead on again at 200... The old 50/200 battle sighting... :a26:

Thats kinda the range I was thinking. The place where most of the carbine matches are held around here has a max distance of about 50 yards. So I think I will settle with 50.

Agreed it is best to try and shoot it at 200, or atleast try to chrono the loads and figure out what it should be at 50, its around .70 inches low IIRC for a lot of the loads I have tried.....

For a nonmagnified optic, the 50yd zero is the ticket. Point of impact is within a few inches +- of point of aim from 0-200yds. After that find out how much drop you're getting and hold over accordingly.

I've been using this method with my 5.56 rifles for 3-4 years now. I shoot 6.8 with magnified optics, but with the 5.56 I've had no problems making center of mass hits out to 400 yds with my aimpoints.

Agreed... I feel it works the best as well...

And its not as bad as 3 inches low at 200...

With the 55gr. and 62gr. AE loads only .4 or .6 inches high at 50 puts it dead on at 200...

I went ahead and sighted my irons and my aimpoint in at 50yrds for now. They aren't quite dead on at 50. I left it about an inch low for right now which will make it close to 100 yards if I am not mistaken. I was at a poorly lit indoor range and I wasn't able to get the dark lenses out of my frame to switch to the clear ones. So I had a pretty hard time aiming with my irons.

I figured that would work just fine for next sunday's carbine match. Then I can head out to my ranch the following week to get it dead on.

I really like the aimpoint by the way. Can't wait to see how much my time improves now that I will be running a 5.56 with aimpoint instead of my 6.8 with millett dms.

.2 -.4 inches low at 50 puts you dead on at 100... You might be about half an inch low at 100... Just FYI

Thanks. I couldn't really remember how low it was supposed to be. The last time I used a 50 yard range to sight a rifle in at 100 yards was with my .270, and that was about 7 years ago.
No worries... Just keep that in mind and you will be gtg... :a26:
