Shooting bag filler. What to use?

I just found an Uncle Bud's large shooting bag. It's an older model that has small fill ports through straps. What fill should I use. I've seen sand, rice and kitty litter but what did you use and how did it work?

my 3 bags fillings are one is filled with lead shot I did this en led was cheep I do not know what shot sells for now it may be to expensive to be worth it. One is filled with Sand box Sad from the home improvement store and I e is filled with beach sand that I bleached to kill anything living in it. I like the one filled with lead the most because it is solid and conforms to the riffle nicely the 2 with sand are ok but I find they compress and get hard very easily.

IMO, rice and kitty litter are out. They are not heavy enough to create a stable shooting platform. The heavier the ptatform is the more stable it will be, which in turn leads to consistency and accuracy. With that being said, I use the heaviest sand I can find. I sift it as fine as possible and make sure it is completely dry.I have never used lead, but I bet it would even be better.

You guys are making me feel like a Bubba. The last few times I shot off a bag, we used some old feed bags and filled them with dirt. :a06: Been shopping around for a real bag to shoot on.

Personally, I think sand and lead shot are too heavy. A Caldwell deadshot front bag holds around 55lbs. of lead shot. That's not exactly something you want to carry to and from the range. Rice or dried beans are also a bad idea because rats and mice will eat your bag. Kitty litter works well, I like it, but as StingerDan said, it could be heavier. I think BB's and glass or poly stuffing beads are the best compromise between weight and stability. BB's are a lot lighter than lead shot but still have a lot of the same advantages. The same can be said about the stuffing beads. I'm sure you guys have seen or felt the stuffing beads in a teddy bear or other stuffed animal before. I use fish tank rocks. Heavy, but not too heavy, moisture proof, critters don't like em, and if you leave a little space you can squeeze em to shape and they hold it pretty well.

I haven't heard that one, but I kinda like it.

I'm with sfsmedic, the space between two of the pouches on an ALICE pack make a nice expedient rest.

I used rice in an issued sock because I'm high tech.
