I am about to buy my first 6.8mm at the end of this month, and I wondered what is the best kind of scope for hunting and tactical shooting?

Far too ambiguous question.
What are you hunting?
Forest or plains?
Day or night?
How far do you plan to shoot?
What type of tactical?

Forgot to talk about cost and type of hunts etc...

Sorry, newbie here. Lol. Well I would primarily hunting hogs and deer down here in Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Texas. With the occasional hunt up in NY and WA. Also, for cost I would say somewhere around 150-300 dollars. Then after maybe up to 1000 or so.

Vortex makes quality scopes, and their Diamondback series is in your price range, as well as the Bushnell Elite series. As far as magnification, that's personal preference, I prefer 4-12 and up, but im always hunting in a field, never in trees. 2-7 may work better for closer work in the trees in the Southeast.

Best piece of advice I can give is buy once cry once. Get as much scope as you can afford, and you won't feel bad later . I had to learn that the hard way a couple times. Nothing worse than a great rifle that doesn't shoot well because of an inferior scope. I have a $60 Bushnell that was the exception to that rule, but a list of them that proved it right.

Be aware that you may have a problem with your rifle if you are taking it to NY. I believe that any gun taken to NY must meet state standards of nonadjustable stocks and proper (by NY standards) muzzle devices.

Equalizer is right...To be legal for NY standards, it would have to be neutered. You would be better off bringing another rifle instead of modifying your own.

I cannot confirm this, but I read on the net that an AR scope should be built to handle the recoil plus the action of chambering the next round (forward and backward action). Some scopes are built to handle only recoil (bolt action). I only used a cheapo Bushnell on my ARP 6.8 so far. Shoots sub MOA at 100yds. I have less than 200 rounds down range so far, no problems yet.

Welcome to the forum! You've come to the right place for all things 6.8, and more.

I have scopes of various manufacturers on other rifles, but for my dedicated hunting AR in 6.8 SPC I topped it with a Trijicon AccuPoint 3-9X40 w/ green mil-dot reticle. It gives me all the magnification I need within the 6.8's capability for whitetail deer and has excellent low-light properties with the tritium dot. In sunlight the dot is amazingly bright through the fiber optic technology. The glass is excellent.

You can find them for a bit over $600 w/ free shipping if you do some internet footwork - perhaps even less. I bought mine a year ago. The Larue LT-104 w/ VFZ mounts I used ran me about $150.

There are lots of other very good offerings out there at various price points, and I'm sure you'll find one to your liking.

I also use the Trijicon 3-9 in a LaRue mount on my 16" upper. I wish Trijicon made a 2-7 or 1-6.

What's the least expensive but still good quality scope with a mil dot reticle? Maybe a 3-9x40... I'd like to get one and learn to use it with my 6.8 and future 5.56

Try looking for a NFS in 2.5- 10 x 24 as they are no longer produced in the 24 mm objective size as they went to a 32mm but they are one Hell of a scope and quite reasonable when purchased used and will have the Lifetime warranty with it ! The mount buy the Warne Tactical one piece you won't regret it solid as a rock as I have this exact setup on my 6.8 LWRC but that's just my .02m worth!Remember you can't hit it if you can't see it!

I bought a Vortex Viper 3-9x40 for $300 delivered. Really nice scope. Mounted it with a Burris PEPR.

Spend your presumably hard-earned money on quality and do it once. Quality glass and just as important, a quality mount. I am amazed by the number of people who will spend a ton on a new rifle and put complete junk on for a scope and mounts.

Check out Larue. They have some great scopes combined with their outstanding mounts in very well price packages.
As one poster mention, Vortex is an excellent option for glass. American company with a lifetime no question warranty.

The new Aimpoint T-1 has a 2 MOA dot, but over $500

Cheaper Red dot: Vortex sparc I have one on a beater rifle, and I haven't broke it yet.

I use a 2x7 vortex on a 6.8 on and off with an Aimpoint, but 99% of the time I shoot it with the the dot.

There is a review on a forum that some guy abused the ever living hell out of his sparc with zero issues. I've put two on friends rifles and for the cost is definitely a go to cost effective red dot.

Man the new 1 - 8s dfp super scopes sure look amazing over on Snipers Hide. Too bad I cannot afford to spend 3 grand. I was wondering if any one has used the Nightforce 1-4? Worth the 1300? I'm pondering the mill dot reticule to learn the mill dot system. It's really the only reticule I've found that I like in a 1-4 for hog hunting.

Check out the Redfield Revolution scopes they are surprising well priced good quality and are made my Leupold.

http://www.redfield.com/riflescopes/

I have a 2-7X with their Accu-Range reticle on my T/C Contender carbine in 45-70 shot a nice blacktail buck with the combo this fall to give an idea of recoil the load was 325gr Hornady FTX @ 1850fps and the scope is standing up to the snap very nicely.

I put the Redfield 3-9x40 on my 6.8. Just because I have one on my 30-30. And I've had zero issues with it. All my shots are 200 yards or less. So this setup works for me. I do have a Leupold 3-9x40 on my 5.56 and I haven't really noticed any difference between the two when shooting. Although, I've actually found the eye relief on the Redfields seem to be better for me than the Leupolds.

I hunt in NY with my RRA 6.8spc, I am also originally from there so not that big of a deal for me, but it wasn't to bad to make the rifle NY compliant. All I had to do was loose the smith vortex flash hinder and put on a muzzle brake. It did have to pinned and welded but if you find a good smith, you can't even tell. you may also want to see what ever else you may have on your rifle for NY compliance at http://www.nyfirearms.com/blog/nys-gun-laws/ there is a laundry list of stuff you can't have on your AR up there. Back to your question i have a Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4x on a Leupold IMS mount. love it. I have seen that scope with a nikon m-233 mount for under $310 on i thin amazon. good luck, tough choices, but spend every penny you can to avoid disappointment

I agree with the statement to get as much scope as you can afford, but remember a scope is about the optics. Whoever said to check your local pawn shops was right on, to stay within your price parameters, I would look for a good used or "open box" Leupold, Burris or similar low power scope. I hunt or have hunted in most of the places you listed and anything more than a 2-7 is just extra weight and $$$$, a 1-4 would be fine, I have an old Weaver 1.5X scope on one of my ar's and its fine for nearly everything in the Southeast and it weighs half of what a 3-9 does. I have guided lots of hunters internationally and most of these guys have more money than they know what to do with and you know what optics almost all of them have? They have Leica or Swarovski binos and Leupold scopes, you can spend more money to get a "cool" scope or you can just buy good solid optics with a lifetime warranty. Some of those new trendy scope "manufacturers", you might want to check and see what they actually "make", Some "American" companies make NOTHING, they just have an office in the Midwest and contract out ALL of their manufacturing to Beijing or wherever. I don't have a problem with any company doing what they think is best, I do have a problem with companies promoting themselves as American when they make nothing here.
