For 200.00, it almost sounds worth it as an experiment--if it's great you have just found a helluva deal, if it's terrible you could sell it at a gun show and lose very little if anything. A friend's dad was a gunsmith and had a very high opinion of 8mm Mausers (the rifle and the round), but other than this distant secondhand knowledge I have no experience with it myself. Would love to know if you bite the bullet and go for it, though--my gun $$ is getting saved up for SSA ammo at the moment unfortunately.

Another thought--haven't checked, but 8mm ammo might be one of the few available calibers at the moment. Another reason to give it a try?

The Mauser reciever is great if you can get one in descent condition. Most I've seen are Argentine in origin, but should do fine. To get the most out of the 8x57mm round you will probably need to hand load. Loaded ammo is downloaded more or less because of a small calibre change of the 8mm (now 7.92mm, used to be tiny bit smaller). That's where the s and js come from when you look at certain mausers.

I have a Spanish 1944 M98 Mauser. My brother picked it up for $25.00 in the mid 60's at a hardware store. He gave it to me a long time ago and that gun is fine with the original iron sights.
Rifling is perfect. I doubt the gun ever saw any battles. I've thought about about putting a scope
on it, just never followed up on it. 8x57mm (.323 cal) Midway should have brass and bullets for it.
If you can get one in good shape for $200.00, it would be well worth it. Just put some rubber on the butt. kicks like a mule. :D :D :D

I bought an 8mm mauser sniper rifle years ago for $89. I put a scope on it that cost $125. Everything is original except the scope and sling (repro) It even still has the waffenamps.
My reloads will cloverleaf at 100yds and it has taken many a deer. Not a bad investment

I couldn't remember where the change took place, thanks.

I'd love to get my hands on a Zastava M7(6?). Built like a PSL, but uses the 8x57mm ammo. Problem is they are hard to get for reasonable prices right now (last I saw one it was going for over $2000).
