I took the liberty of sending an email to Hornady last week regarding the possibilities of offering a 100 gr GMX bullet for the 6.8... below is thier email response... Not sure what the last part means.

"As we go through the line adding the GMX bullets we may add one for the
6.8 cartrigge. I will put it on my want list."

I read some on this bullet and they were talking that the bullet needed velocity to open (duh! I know) and that in the 308, normal velocity was 2700 fps at the muzzle, which would limit this round to about 300 meters or so. The port that I read mentioned that because of the lower velocity, this round wouldn't be ideal for the 308. I'm not sure what a 6.8 round would be traveling at FPS wise but unless you have it loaded at max, would this round be better then let's say the 85 gr barnes load, pro hunter, or accubond load?

Not trying to pee in anyone's cherrios but just wondering based on what I read about this bullet. Wouldn't it be better if they came out with something around 90 grs to take advantage of the velocity of the 6.8?

I'm fairly sure they'd take that into consideration along with constructing it in such a manner that you would get 300 yards of range. At least, we can hope they are using their heads, doesn't always happen!

The TSX we are using now needs atleast 2100 FPS to open, which when going 3100 FPS is good out to around 300 yards IIRC, I figure if you could get a 99 or 100 grain bullet like that, with a speed of around 2950-3000 (which is what harrison got with the 100 accubonds) you would be going plenty fast to down where the bullet itself dropped below the 1K threshold I like to use for game animals, again around 300 yards.

A has it exactly right. This was exactly the discussion I had with the tech dept when I called them.

They seemed intersted in the concept and were very profssional in their discussion of it, with me. I take this to mean that a 90 - 100 grain GMX is a definite possiblity.

Good things, gentlemen.....good things.

Thanks HTR for the data and the prod...

I love the fact that we DO have a say in matters if directed to the right entities in a professional manner...

This may sound like a dumb question, but why not go for the 70-80gr range that might increase muzzle velocity to 3200+? A polymer-tipped all brass bullet would be awesome at such high velocities.
I would have to guess, that in the eyes of an innovative company that is looking for new niches into which to sell their product, these ideas are always welcome.

Perhaps you should pass that along to them.....

I personally think that 95-100 grain bullets are a perfect combination of speed and energy, add to that a ballistic tipped all copper bullet and we have a winner :D

Dual purpose and or profit is the reason for staying up in a certain weight range. By staying above a certain weight they can still get some spill over into the other .270 cartidges. Wehn you get down in the low 90s and lower you are talking exclusive 6.8 bullet that would that woudl be on the light side for it. I would love to have one as I like fast and flat traj but from a buisness model the other make better sense.

I have been playing with bullet development and variosu softwares to spec them out for a couple years nwo on the 6.8 and combining that with what we have seen perf in the real world the 95-105 with 100 being the ideal bullet weight for the 6.8 to get the most out of all areas BC vel traj energy. This is specially taking into account the bullet max length you can use with the AR. At 100 you can get a bullet with the highest of BCs at the max length you can use with a minimal bearing surface. When you go over this with a good sleek bullet design you get to long.

IMO the 100 Accubond is the best bullet currently for the 6.8 followed by some other depending on what your specific goal is.

What I woudl like to see:

NUMBER ONE: 100gr Tipped Trophy Bonded Bear Claw!!!!

90-95 TTSX

100 Hrdy OTM

95 TNT with a BT

Match bullet from Berger

Make the BearClaw the opening release from Federal getting into the 6.8 followed by some cheap FMJ in their Eagle line.
You put that bearclaw 6.8 loaded to around 2800-2850 form a 16"along with a FMJ plinikng round that goes the same basic traj for training for LE and you will see much larger monument by the LE sector which we are already starting to see some if my orders are any indication.

Definitely. Even better if they'd knock off the nickel plating on these bullets (wouldn't have that pretty orange and silver color scheme, but what the hell :) ).

Hell I woudl take it in hot pink even just get it out there. The TBC already has huge LE support and following so they would all jump on it for sure. In other areas it woudl also be a big hit from hunter as well. It would be all around a very well received offering.

My fav current offerings are

Premium:
100 accubond
85 tsx
110 Accubond
110 OTM (human terminal perf)

Plinking

115 FMJ
90 TNT
100 PSP

wow tim the PH's don't make the cut? at very similar prices to the tnt's and awesome downrange performance I am rather surprised.
