R15 handguard tool

Hello, I had to take the barrel off my R15-223, which first required the handguard to be removed. It has a very narrow knurled lock ring that is screwed onto the barrel nut first, then the handguard, which I figure is pretty standard. Anyway, the lock ring is around a 1/4" or less and I had to grind down a channel lock pliers to get it off. I also wrapped a piece of leather around it so as not to damage the knurling. It worked, but it's not what I would call an ideal tool for the job. Does anyone know of something that would work better ? I don't think a strap wrench is the solution either as the lock ring sits lower that either the lip of the barrel nut or handguard and as I said, its thin.

Thanks, Joe

Does it have grooves in it?

The YHM wrench would probably work.

No groves at all, just knurled and it was on tight ! No loctite either.
Thanks, Joe

They must use some sort of strap wrench on them and loctite.

I could see them using some sort of strap wrench, but I can assure you, they did not use any loctite. I'll take a couple pictures when I have some time.

If you remove the handguard first does it have holes in the face for a standard barrel nut wrench?

the handguard is just an aluminum tube that has threads on the barrel nut end. No holes or anything. It goes on the same as the Yankee Hill Machine handguards, but the jam nut doesn't have notches on it, just the knurling. No screws at 3 and 9 o'clock either. If you look at the picture, it's of the Yankee Hill set up. you can see the jam nut threaded all the way to the end of the barrel nut. It has grooves on it and would work perfect with the wrench that semi-cop suggested, but the R15 jam nut is knurled. Like semi-cop said, they must use a strap wrench of some sort but it has to be thin, because the Remington nut is thinner than the one pictured.

If nothing else, I will grind down the teeth of the channel locks so they can't damage the knurling, I was just hoping for a better solution.

Can you post a close up of the barrel nut?
I will when I get home in a couple days, working out of town now.
Thanks, Joe

Here is the handguard and barrel nut. The lock ring is about 1/4" You can also see where the gas tube/block were leaking. It came with a cut down front site style gas block, with set screws. I'm switching it to a clamp on style.

once H gets in his 223 Wylde barrels in, this gun will get one!

Thanks, Joe
