Years ago, (25 or so) I had a Mini 14 and I had a 20 round mag or two. Maybe some of the other "old timers" will recall but it seems to me that someone was marketing a magazine that would work in both the AR rifles and the Mini 14. I have no idea if this is so or not as I haven't had a Mini 14 since then and didn't have it long as I had a family to feed and it was not as important as some of the other things I had.

IIRC the Mini 14 mags have a small slot in the rear of the mag that is the lock point for them. The question is; If I am not too senile and dreamed this up, would it be possible to cut such a slot in an AR mag at the proper location to allow them to be used in the Mini in 6.8?

If this would work then the guys with the Mini 14 in 6.8 would then have a hi cap magazine. If this never happened or doesn't work then just chalk it up to a case of CRS.

The mini 14 mag has a hole in the front used to load the mag. The Mini mag also is narrowed by aproximately 1/8" for the first 1 1/2" of the mag. The top of the mag body is also cut down about a 1/4". I remember the mags you were talking about and IIRC the mags were for the Mini but would also function in the AR. It's been 25 years since I had a Mini but still have a mag laying around.

They did make mags that were interchangable. The ones I have were polymer, zytel or something like that made by Ramline. Never really used them in the AR since I had enough surplus ones from the Army but its nice to have a little versatility.

Comparing them, it looks like the Ramlines are narrower in front than the AR mags. You would also have to cut the notch in the back like you mentioned. I don't know how the Mini-6.8 Mag design would differ.

Eagle Industries and Ramline. I have both from pre-ban Mini-14 ownership. The Eagle Industries ones actually work pretty well. I never hard abused them for durability, but for reliability hunting and plinking, they have been great.

Hmmm, I know better than to approach my guns with a Dremel, but attempting a mag mod seems to have a sufficient risk/reward potential. I have a couple .223 Minis but not one in 6.8, so I have no way to test it--but if I did, I'd go for it. Anybody try this yet?
