Just to confirm: I assume the bolt carrier for the 6.8 is the same as that for the 5.56, right?

Second question: I have seen two distinctly different carriers. One carrier extends back to almost surround the firing pin entirely, so that when the carrier starts its rearward travel the firing pin is pushing back only briefly on the hammer before the carrier takes over that job. With the other that part of the carrier is much shorter so that for most of the carrier's movement rearward it's the firing pin pushing back on the hammer. In other words, with the carrier group out of the gun, the latter one lets you see the rear-most cm of firing pin but with the former you can only see the last couple mm.

The first one is on a late model Stag 5.56 and the latter is on a 2004 vintage M1S 6.8. The Stag's seems much nicer so I wondered: Is this is an update?

5.56 and 6.8 use the same carrier, Yes the carrier with shrouded pin is better.
Thanks!

I have an Xtreme on order with Tim W. but I'm still trying to decide what to do with my old M1S. Keeping two guns around that fire the same cartidge but at very different power levels seems like an accident waiting to happen.

Sell the M1S upper?
Rebarrel the M1S? (and upgrade the carrier?) It has a nice YHM folding gas block BUIS but I wonder where they got the bolt or the upper receiver...

Decisions, decisions.

The unshrouded carrier was common in semi-auto AR's for years until the past few years when the shrouded versions started showing up. Your AR will probably be fine with the unshrouded carrier unless you are running it very hard. Keep an extra firing pin handy just in case. It's cheaper than replacing the carrier. It's up to you though.

Rebarrelling so you can have the same performance from your ammunition makes sense. AR15Performance barrels are at the top of the mountain if you want that level of performance. Bison Armory also has some SPC II, 1:11 4-groove stainless steel barrels that are now available.
