Purchasing first 6.8

I have never owned a 6.8 but finally got the thumbs up from the wife. After poking around I believe I am going to get a 6.8. I have a ranch here in Texas and want something with enough power to drop deer and pigs. I am having trouble deciding between two rifles however. Armalite M-15 Light Tactical Carbine of Rock River Arms 6.8 X-1. What are your thoughts? Or do you recommend any others in that price range? I dont really want to go the route of building one yet as I am not familiar enough with how it works. Thank you for any input.

The RRA only has a 1.5 MOA guarantee in the accuracy department and the Armalite is a chromelined barrel so I doubt it'll do much. Ether. If you intend on doing this for a pig killer or deer rifle I recommend letting a company who specializes in this round gain your business.

Not sure how you are with hints OP, but Brett will set you up with a nice rifle, unless he is officially done do to life things and BS laws going in to affect.

But If you are your buddies are competent in the AR platform, why not put you one together.
Do you already own an AR? If so let Brett build you a 6.8 upper and use your current lower. I used the same lower for 5.56 and 6.8 for a while.
If you can disassemble a AR far enough to clean it you can but a complete upper and complete lower. Putting them together is literally 2 pins that push by hand.

Personally I think both the rifles you listed are under performers and much too expensive. You need to do much more research. Look to the industry partners here for better choices. You can buy a simple complete and cheap lower almost anywhere and then purchase a much higher quality and accurate upper. Familiar "brand names" such as Armalite and RRA don't always mean they are the best bang for the buck. It just means they have good marketing and people foolish enough to believe it.

I am not out! Up and going and moving towards full time as my retirement paperwork finalizes. :a04:

Good to hear. I knew some things came up last year. Guess I am behind on things lol.

But OP, if you want an upper already put together talk to the man above. He will set you up.
For the money, neither of those excite me but I'd lean towards the RRA. But if the RRA is running ~$1,400, then I'd step up to a Barrett Rec7DI.

Edit: I just saw this Rec7DI for sale at under $1,500: https://www.slickguns.com/product/barrett-rec7-gen-ii-di-68mm-spc-16-30-rd-black-146355-add-cart
Ironworks tactical. You'll want an arp barrel. I love mine. I've got a couple others and all they do is make me want to swap the barrels on them to arp.
Didn't know a thing about Ar's when I built mine.
Hadn't even shot one. If you are handy with
tools and have access to a good vise, you should
be able to build one. Just a few other tools to
get. There is nothing like building your own. Go
on internet there are all kinds of sites on building
an AR. Midway USA even has one.
Brett has my vote.. he is building me one right now and is a awesome guy to work with.

texas: If you are not inclined to build your own rifle (not that difficult IMO), then have one built for you by one of our esteemed 6.8 specialist companies, either Bison Armory or Ironworks Tactical (see IWT's posts above). Both have excellent reputations and can build a better rifle tailored for you at competitive prices, using the highest quality parts. The other assembly line makers you mentioned are more likely to use cheapo parts and assemble them in a hurry. good luck - CW
Thank you everyone for the replies. Been talking all day with Brett @ Ironworks. Will be slaying pigs in no time!

This forum needs a like button!!
I like how everyone recommends brett. it took a full page before I mentioned iwt. You know the poor guy was googling "brett 6.8 upper" like a mad man. We often forget not everyone knows who H is, or brett, or any of the other sponsors we often refer to by name.

Haha yep and IWT doesn't really help much either as the website and forum thread is titled Ironworks Tactical.
