Powder Question

7239 Views 35 Replies 19 Participants Last post by  David
Just starting to get all of my reloading equipment together. I plan to start reloading the ammo for whatever hunting I might get to do, mostly deer and coyote within 200 yards and some range ammo.

Plan is to use a 100gr or 110gr bullet, my own fired brass, CCI magnum primers and of course, powder.

I would like a suggestion as to the likely best powder to start with as a newbie. Something reliable and clean as possible. My choice, after doing a lot of reading here in the reloading section would probably have been H322, but, others may suggest something better. I didn't want to buy a whole lot of powder until I understand a whole lot more about what I am doing so I will start with small cans bought locally.

My rifle is built with a 16" ARP Scout profile barrel, midlength gas system.

aa2200 in my opinion is the best all around powder for 6.8 --- check out the reloading stickies for lots of info

I have read almost all of those stickies but still a lot I do not comprehend yet.

Knowing back when you started, what you know now, would you load according to a certain manual or use data provided here by others?

depends on your reloading experience and ability to read pressure signs---do you have a chronograph? with the arp barrel I would use reload data in the stickies, but back off by 10% and work up to stay safe

Welcome

In general, you should follow the manuals starting at a lower published charge and work up.

The 6.8 SPC and SPCII are a different case. The original specification for SAAMI (the so called legal registration) was the 6.8 SPC chambered barrel. The 6.8SPCII (and variations) is a slightly modified chamber that allows higher working pressure and thus potential higher velocity. Virtually all factory ammo is 6.8SPC and virtually all manuals are to 6.8SPC specs. To obtain higher performance the 6.8SPCII barrels are capable, you have to PUSH the charges and usually will be at max charges in the manuals AND BEYOND. Thus you need to be careful.

Charges posted in this forum are good as guidelines BUT be careful regarding claimed performance. Some are really really pushed. What is safe in one brand barrel may not be in a similar brand and model, Barrels VARY in same brand, style, length. Performance CLAIMED is (or may be) based on the individuals observations, experience and velocity based on their own chrony (assuming accurate and used correctly) and observations. There may be (may be) some comfort when many claim similar performance with a stated recipe. I, for one, keep a spreadsheet of interesting posted recipes to compare for similar results as a starting point. Very interesting when a few posters state velocities higher than most similar recipes. Granted he may have a special barrel from the batch or his equipment (like the chrony) is slightly off.

I fall in the category of pushing charges on the high side as I prefer ACCEPTABLE accuracy (group size) for hunting purpose rather than tightest group shooting paper. I also fall in the category of longer barrels, minimum 18", mostly 20" ones and soon a 22". Again for extra velocity. Just my preference. Others are free to pick their pet preferences.

Get a copy of "ABC's Of Reloading" by Richard Lee. I've been reloading for about 20 years, and still go back to it when my memory gets cloudy.

I have absolutely NO reloading experience. All I have is age, a propensity to read a lot and to be careful. I do not have a chrono yet. Not sure I would need one as long as I am pretty sure I am getting decent enough velocities to serve the purpose. I have no need to push the speed. I just want good accuracy and reliability of ignition and performance.

Since I also punch paper I will be loading some range ammo that doesn't need to be hotter than hot.

I will take your suggestion and compare posted sticky data with the manual data and start very safe and work up from there. Thank you!
I have used both h322 and aa2200. Both 12.5 and 11.3 ar likes the 2200 better. But h322 is good to. I use the h323 mainly for 233 now.

I just started loading 6.8 SPC as well. I'm currently pushing 110 V-max's with AA2200 and it works great.
I use 3 powders for the 6.8; H4198 for 85-90gr bullets, For 100+ I use H322 or AA2200.

What he said. plus i have some RE7 for the light bullets as well.
With 110 gr bullets I can get H322, AA2200 and 10x to perform well in my 2 6.8s
As of now my plan is to load using 120gr Hornady SST. Not sure where to find AA2200 locally yet. Cabelas doesn't seem to have it. We also have a Gander Mountain and have not looked there yet. Several other places to check.

Cabelas does have A2230 and A4350. Either of those a good choice for the heavier bullets?

look at WWW.gunbot.net someone should have some AA2200 but of course you have the cost of hazmat fee's

Oh yeah, the hazmat fee added to the shipping charge is a killer for me. Gonna go the local route if possible. I don't want to buy a lot of powder until I know what/which ones I will be using.
I stick to 4 powders for the 6.8.For 85-90gr. I use H4198 or RE-7 and 100gr. + I use AA200 or H322. I could never get the accuracy I was pleased with 10X.

AA2230 might work for the 120, but it will be lower velocity. The burn rate of 4350 is far too slow.

With the upcoming presidential election and the almost certainty of HRC becoming the next POTUS I would invest in 2 or more 8# jugs of AA2200 at Powder Valley. You will be glad that you banked away some powder for the future as the panic buying will be insane once again. I have a nice stash set aside for all my calibers that is good as gold for this scenario. I think I should be good for about 10 years. I will never be caught without again.
Found two good sources of powder to day and both are local! I picked up some AA2200 while it was there!

Since I have 1200-R and AA2200, should I add some H322 or other just in case I load something lighter?
