Not even sure how to start this question. I don't want FMJ's or OTM's in one weight and hunting rounds in another... I have been searching the threads on here and on the net. Not trying to be caliber specific, but prefering 7.62x51 and the 6.8SPC, is there a type and weight of bullet to look at that seems to be the best suited for all around work? [We talk about how the OTMs are great, and are starting to be used by the military, but are bad for hunting (even illegal, I believe, in some places). Guys love the Accu Bonds and VMAX's, etc. etc. etc. (I can't even keep up with all the new ones) for hunting, but are they able to penetrate like and OTM if needed in a different situation?] I no longer get to shoot a lot, and we all know that shooting some calibers can be expensive, now-a-days. I don't want to have to (for lack of a better term) "stockpile" different types or weights of bullets for my weapons. I want to be able to zero several weapons for one bullet weight. Therefore, no matter who needs to pick up one of my weapons with what ammo I have, knows its zeroed at 100yds, and capable to do what the job requires of it. Yes, I know to hold over or under with different weight bullets, but not everybody shoots enough to know or do this, so this is my way of setting up a KISS for my supply. Oh, out to 300 yards max is my range too... Thanks in advance for any opinions guys!

First are you going to just be hunting deer or hogs or what?

Will you carry this rifle in a patrol vehicle or are you just going to stock pile for your personal world ending scenario..

Second the 100 grain accubonds were designed to be used by LEO's that didnt want the same penetration as the 110...

so I would suggest going with the 100 accubond, or the 110 accubond (the 110 is on sale right now)

Honestly, either the accubonds or the prohunters would be fine both have proven to work well on deer and both will shoot through stuff if needed to kill bad guys... pro hunters may be better since they are a little cheaper....

Raph,

I actually asked this questioned a while ago and had a good conversation with Paulo about it. After looking at the "Best bullet for the Job" thread I cameout with the Hornady 110gr BTHP with or without cannalure. This bullet was excellent for what I was looking for as it covered almost everything and it was fairly cheap. Midway has them but there not instock right now, but you can get them for about $22-24 per 100.

I hope that helps!

A link below is for the bullet

I am not a fan of using non hunting bullets for hunting.

OTM bullets can work on game, just like they work on people but if you can use a expanding hunting bullet for the application it makes sense to go with it.

IMHO of course

If you don't want to use the BTHP bullets, the Pro-Hunters are great for deer/SHTF. The Hornady 110 Gr. BTHP bullets are also great because they are tough bullets and hold up very well.

Not to give you more choices to make, but how about those 85 grain TSX's that SSA loads. They're all copper, have an incredible weight retention, and outstanding expansion in game, plus they have very good barrier penetration. There's a pic in a thread on this site where 85 TSX's burned through steel plate that stopped other 6.8 bullets. Ask Constructor more about that event as he was one of the hunters on that trip.

Plus, clocking over 3000 fps out of a 16 inch barrel gives these bullets a nice flat line of sight trajectory out to the 300 yard range you quote. They will perform well on deer and large hogs.

I like the ProHunters quite a bit. They're a solid choice also.

I spent a lot of thought on this very issue and chose the 110g Sierra Pro Hunters and have not regretted the choice in the least.

The Pro Hunter is:

1. The least expensive legal 6.8 SPC hunting round for deer.

2. It is one of the most accurate 6.8 SPC hunting rounds for deer. I've now shot multiple .400 - .875" 3-5 shot groups with this bullet using off the shelf SSA ammo. Sierra has a reputation for excellent accuracy with this bullet.

3. For protection, it was rated by Doc as one of the best barrier blind projectiles yet one of the most effective for this intended duty.

4. I can buy cosmetic second bullets from Sierra for less than $9.80 per pound. This makes the Pro Hunter the least expensive target round as well. Bought by the pound... It is less expensive than the Remington FMJ...and more accurate.

5. The 8 pt buck I killed last season @ 80 yds with a Pro Hunter dropped in his tracks. It was a quartering away shot where the bullet entered ahead of the last right side rib and took out both lungs. I found the bullet fully expanded under the skin of the left front shoulder... having penetrated about 18" and expending ALL of it's energy in the animal. I consider that excellent bullet performance.

6. There is a wealth of reloading data available for this bullet and success stories abound of it being used on deer, coyotes and hogs.

It may not be the latest and greatest bullet technology, but it is a very accurate and effective round that excels in nearly every category...except cost.

I can reload two Pro Hunter rounds for about half the cost of reloading a single copper TSX or accubond round...

For me the decision was a no brainer.

I saw the plate that those 85's zipped through HTR had it delievered that :D I hope he wasnt made we broke it in the first hour or so :D either way the only worry we have about the 85's is no one I know of has shot a deer in the ribs with it, so we arent 100 percent sure it will expand on medium game....

I doubt HTR was mad about it. He's loading 85 TSX's himself now isn't he? :)

I just think the TSX opened some doors for the 6.8, and the performance on that plate is a big hint.

Kerry makes sense with the ProHunter if cost is a concern for all around performance. The price adds up with any good 6.8 ammo for the most part, or any caliber now days for that matter.

No I dont think he was mad but we were all surprised that the factory loading wouldn't and H's hand load would... there wasn't much of a difference in velocity per the chrono.....

I agree the TSX has opened a ton of doors, again the only thing is no one has shot a deer with it and I worry it wont open till it is almost through... especialy on a smaller deer with a broadside shot...

I just want to see a deer shot with the 85 before I recoomend it for deer hunting....

Looks like one of us will have to shoot a deer with the 85. The race is on for the fall !! Who's going to be first? :)

The Pro Hunters are great, don't get me wrong. I'm just enamored with the performance of the 85 TSX.

Sierra bullets have provided good performance for me. So I'll continue to buy them.

I have shot deer broadside with the 150 Grain TSX's at 2780 to 3100+ FPS in my .308,30-06,& 7MM mag. I shot a 125 pound 8 point this year at 30 yards. It destroyed both lungs and a couple of ribs. Hole on the offside was about 3/4". That was with my 16" .308 at 2780 FPS. If a 150 expands at 2780 an 85 should at 3000+ FPS. When my 6.8 is finished I will use the TSX's to hunt with. I doubt I will ever use anything else for hunting deer with all of my rifles. They may cost more but I have had good luck with them.
