Plinking / General Use Load

So, I'm trying to figure out what bullet I want to chose to be my general purpose range / critter load. So far I have loads accurate enough to please me with both 90TNT and 110 Sierra Pro Hunter. Last one I'm thinking about working up a load for is 110 Hornady BTHP. My thoughts with the last one is possibly I could have an easier time with it at 400 yards when messing around at the range. It will be a range bullet first, but I'd still like to pick one that I could use in a pinch on coyotes and personal protection. No large predators in my area except for the extremely rare cougar. Ideally I'm trying to find only one load for this purpose.

Nosler's 115 gr Custom Comp bullet give similar results out of my ARP as the Hornady 110 gr BTHP.
I run an all purpose cast bullet . That's about cheap as it gets it takes about 700-1000 rd to break even but it's worth it . As demand increases there will be more choices . if you're set up to cast anything else it is cheaper than above .

The Hornady 120 SST shot well for me .
I bought a couple hundred of the Speer 90 grain TNT bullets from Powder Valley for an all purpose bullet. My rifle is sighted in with 90 grain GD factory loads so I figured I would stay in the ballpark weight wise. My fantasy is to get both to shoot to the same point of aim.

The TNT should do well on coyote and they are cheaper than most bullets other than FMJ's.
Hard to beat the 90g gold dot pulls.
This would be my choice, but they are only infrequently available and often for a very limited time before the supply sells out. I wish I could find 90 gr Gold Dots at a regular frequency.

What he said. It would be nice to have a 90-100gr medium size game bullet at around or under $20 a hundred to load for general purpose.
I agree with Harter on the cast boolit...

If I remember correctly, he was shooting the N.O.E. 279-124-FP. This is the same boolit I am shooting and the accuracy is very good out to 250 yards, but you must know the holdovers on your 'scope...

I am shooting it using IMR-7383 powder that I purchased as surplus some years back...

Regardless, I am reloading them for $1.24 per box of 20 rounds--the powder is dirt cheap...

I doubt that load would cycle a semi if that is what you are shooting them it...

I don't know what jacketed bullet would be good for plinking, but I know they all are expensive. Or they sure seem that way as I have shot probably only a box or so of Sierra 90 HP jacketed bullets in the past 15 years--cast all the way now. The 90 grain Sierra I found did shoot pretty well in my 6.8...

Good-luck...BCB

Don't need to work one up for the 110 Hornady. 28.5 gr. of 2200 sparked by a #41 primer is already a proven load, and a known accurate performer. That's been well known for several years, with minor tweeks of a couple tenths up or down for some guys. No need to reinvent the wheel.

The Gold Dots seem to be readily available in factory loaded rounds but I haven't seen any of the pulled Gold Dot bullets for sale. Sure wish they would offer them as a component.

I have spoken directly with Speer about offering them as components.
The reason they won't offer Gold Dots or Fusions as components is they are built for specific load/speed.
Speer is afraid reloaders will push the projectiles and then they won't preform as intended. I mean really, would we do that? :)
That straight from the head of production at the factory in Lewiston Id. Where they are produced.
i have everything from 90 gr. to 130 gr. bullets. if i had to choose one as an all purpose bullet you disire it would be Hornady 110 OTM. it seems to be the most available at any time and it's accurate and good out to 600 yds for target shooting. can't speak of it's performance on game ( i shoot Vmax for that) but i can't imagine it wouldn't down coyote size animals at 500yds.
