PACT timers are good and take a beating. So are CED. I use the CED 6000, but just because I've had it a while. Most clubs around here use the CED 8000 or PACT Club Timer III. Most guys I see now use the CED 7000 for practice which is much smaller and lighter and the battery life is good. I'll replace my 6000 with the 7000 when the time comes. My only compliant with it is that the buttons are bit small for my fingers.

I was just looking at the CED8000, is it to bulky for personal use? I looked at the 7000 but it looked small

when I said Pac I meant shot timers.....

No, the CED 8000 is not too bulky. The 7000 is small. They sell a wristband to wear it, which is nice. The larger timers clip on your belt, which can be difficult to start sometimes (even with random delay) and get into position for your drill.

If you were unaware of PACT timers, them you should also look at these:

CED and PACT are the 2 brands I see more than any other at IDPA and USPSA matches. As a matter of fact, I can't think of another brand. There is a little yellow timer that I see every now and them, but I have seen those break on more than one occasion.

Don't know what you plan to do with it. The PACT club timer is the tougher of the two if you plan to rough it up but has less features - just the stuff you'd need to run a club match. IMHO, The CED 8000's only fault is the hinge. CED 8000 has more features for advanced training like par times, random starts, etc. and also the ability to run a board and stop plates. FWIW, the 7000 does essentially the same thing and is cheaper. The PACT MKIV XP Championship Timer is more in line with the features of the CED8000, plus it has a chrono built in.

Also, if you have an iPhone, there is/was a downloadable app by Surefire that has some of the timer features to play with and see which ones you like 1st. http://www.surefire.com/shottimerFAQ It was in the Apple apps store for free, but it looks like its gone now. I'm sure some searching on the internet would get you a link. (FYI, also an iPhone ballistics calculator http://isnipe.webdiligence.ca/)

To answer your question, of the two, I'd pick the CED8000 because of the advanced training features.

I just had to rehash an old thread. Did a google search for a pac timer and wouldnt you know it, 68forums was the very first result. I saw where M4Super90 put something about the iphone, so I did a good search on the Android app store and found a pretty damn useful app called IPSC Shot Timer. After playing with it, it looks like it works like a charm. Anyone else looking for a get by and that doesnt want to shell out 100+ bucks might want to look into it.

Can vouch for the surefire one that is free on the Iphone. I use it in doors and have you used it at the range a couple times when I forgot my Pact. Have one of the pact's as well and it is a good timer and tough but it is just a basic timer. I would like easier controls for all the training stuff as well. Looking to pick up a CED 7K soon.
