OK, I've got a PTR-91. I like the thought of having a .308 in the arsenal, but HK/PTR's seem like a fat hairy one to get a scope on. Those claw scope mounts are more expensive than I'd prefer to fork out for a friggin mount, and they don't look to stable to me. I've never actually had one on the rifle, but it just looks like a poor mount option to me.

I would like to get a FNAR. They're nice looking, set up for optics and should be a reliable platform. Problem is they want more bucks for them than they're willing to give for the PTR. Even after I offered to put $200 in on the deal, it was a no go.

They've got DPMS .308's that would be pretty much a swap, but I'm leery of yet another gas impingement system to toil over and I'm not so sure how they do at range. 3-4-5 hundred yards.

So, whats yer qualified (or not) opinions on my dilemma? Save up enough for the FNAR, go with the DPMS, or suck it up and stay with the PTR?

Thanks,
Rick out!

If you have the budget for it, the LWRC REPR should be out in the Fall this year. It is a piston driven 7.62 AR that should be really nice. It will have a cold hammer forged barrel with Nitraded finish inside and out, a left side charging cocking handle that will also work as a forward assist, and will come in barrel lengths 12.7", 16", 18", and 20" with collapsing stock. It will have the flat top AR design so you can mount optics easily. It will use SR25 type magazines which Magpul will be making a pmag for. Needless to say, I have one on order. I just tried to put a link here but their web site seems to be down for the moment.

I have a HK91 also and the scope mounts do suck but, the rifle is unstoppable. I purchased a steel picatinny rail from PRI and tig welded it to the HK then slapped an Aimpoint on it.
IMO the PTR will be more reliable than any 308 AR you can find, it has been battle proven for decades.

Thanks

for the input. I dont have a lot of confidence in the claw mount, but I have read some reviews at chepr-n-dirt and no one seemed to have any complaints about it, so I might try it. That is if I don't get some serious offers at the next gun show. The -91 does look and act like you could pour cement in the action and it'd still work, but its soooo dam heavy. I've run my fingers over a FNAR and it seems about half the weight(slight exaggeration).

I do see problems in the mag dept. -91 $2-$10 FNAR $45 and up

I guess I'll just see what I can get for it at the gun show...$1300 its sold $1100 is iffy.

But, thanks again for the input.
