I am new to this whole world. I am about to purchase an AR style rifle in 6.8 and I am trying to decide what to get. Any input on what works well and why would be great. I was thinking about a Stag Arms model 5 becasue they are made several towns away from me and it feels good to be able to go right to the source with any issues. Then I saw the Barrett REC7...I am a sucker for new and improved designs. Is the piston system the way to go? Obviously there is a huge price difference and the whole argument could be useless since it seems like all of these rifles are hard to come by. Anyway, sorry for the long intro. That is where I stand and I look forward to reading up on all of the info in this forum.

Thanks!

If you are going to go piston (and you shoot a hell of a lot) then go with Addax or LWRC. I would look at the Extreme and go for C's upper and find a nice lower and parts and use the money left over on cool optics and ammo. I would definitly look around here for a while first. I wish I did. 8)

I'm not prone to giving advice, but Im floating around here with noting to do and no one else has posted yet. So here it goes...

I'd say the Stag is not a bad choice, especially if you are a beginner in the field. If you get one, look around to see if there is a smith in the area who could cut feed ramp extensions into the upper reciever for you, as Stag rifles don't come with them and they are a necessity for some of the rounds that are for the 6.8 (larger diameter round = need for larger feed ramps). If you're not stuck on Stag, look around at the info here on the Extreme uppers that TimW and Constructor are producing. You'd need to find a complete lower to put it on, but for a few bucks more than the Stag, you could have a very well built upper.

As for the piston system rifles, my suggestion would be to wait on deciding on that for now. Get a standard rifle, learn the ins and outs of it, and then look at the pros and cons of the two gas systems. From there you can decide if you really want/need a piston. It's a cheaper alternative than getting a piston first and finding out you don't really benefit from, and there are some good aftermarket piston systems that can be retrofitted to the rifle if you decide you really want/need one.

Ooh... (the reason I don't normally do this. I almost forgot to mention this) Welcome to the forums.

Sorry missed the part about Stag. They make a good rifle but as mentioned earlier you will have to cut the feed ramps. Not that big a deal if you have ever used a dremel of made a hobby car in Boy Scouts. Kind of the same thing just take your time. I had to do it with my D.S. and they work great.
