I have a 7.62x39 PWS (piston) upper that I run on a Franklin Armory lower. Saturday I was making sure it's all dialed in with my thermal. One shot, I hear the bullet hit, but no shell kicks out. I get it home, poke the spent shell out, and look at my bolt. Looks like the extractor broke, never had it happen before. I guess I'm wondering if I should try and find a PWS bolt or look for a different bolt?

Can you not just replace the extractor?

Machined extractors for the x39 are a must.

I shoot brass in my 7.62x39. I've never had an issue. Are you shooting steel cases? If so, then an upgraded extractor is probably a good idea.

Extractors are a weak point in 7.62x39, 6.5 Grendel and 6mm ARC bolts. Just keep an extra extractor on hand. They regularly fail with all manufacturer's bolts.

Thanks guys! I'm bought a titanium extractor to try out. I've ran a little but of steel, but mostly brass.

It is a MUST to thoroughly clean chamber AFTER shooting coated steel cases BEFORE shooting brass.
Just in case that was part of the cause.

Why is that? Is this true on any platform / calibre?

The polymer/lacquer coated steel case rounds can leave a residue in the chamber.
Especially after mag dumps. The brass case will grab this.
The X39 taper helps but still will build up stuff.
