Would the mini-mausers out of Zatava by way of Carles Daly ot Remingron make a sutiable receiver/donor for a 6.8 project rifle? Could you rebarel one of the new rifles for a project?

HI. I have a mini mauser action I am working on barreling to 6.8. It is originally for 223 so the magazine well is too narrow to feed well. I am looking to pick up a cheap 7.62X39 for the mag box and follower, but I expect that follower to be too short. It should be easier to build up to height.
the bolt face is not an issue, I'll open it up a bit. The 7.62X 39 bolt face might give extraction issues, and I haven't found replacement parts for those. I hope Remington is going to fill that void. I am thinking an u ltra lightweight rifle with 20 inch #1 stainless barrel should be fun. The cartridge is designed for shorter barrels and the mini mauser action is pretty light. I found a rifle basics lightweight stock for the mini and i will do some bondo work to convert it to left hand.

the mini mauser uses i believe standard mauser trigger groups so a good aftermarket trigger should be easy I have not tried an after market trigger but it sure looks like it would fit. My target weight is under 4 pounds. Everything on the scale right now weighs 3 pounds 15 ounces with out the scope rings. I am doing a scout scope set up for it, with a full barrel band for the mount.

If you have seen other ideas let me hear them!!

Metalsmith,

Thanks for responding. Sounds like you are much furtehr along than I will ever get. Unles that is I stumble on a 7.62 mini Mauser! I have zero skills in metal work and a lmited budget for gunmithery.

To date I just learned that there were 2 mini-Mausers out there. An early model distributed through Interarms had some binding pproblems with the bolt/action. At the factory in Serbia, they reesigned the bolt with an extra lug or two and finer specs on the slots and, voila, it worked smoothly. All subseqent mini Mausers worked fine whether from iterasm Caharles daly or now Remington.

I'm still stuck on the iddea of a good bolt gun or single shot in the caliber as a light stalking rifle. The Rem 700 needs a new barrel for a the improved chamber but they are scarce on the ground, The Ruger compact is not even avaialble but it is too diminutive anyway. I have a couple of Ruger #1 a actions as donors but can't find a craftsman to put together a 6.8 using the #1. Even thought of project around a Cadet action and am still researching that idea.

Regards and good luck on your project.

I found out today that EAA in Florida carries repair parts for the Mark X, Charles Daily, Remington 789, 799 actions and rifles. they are at
1-800-536-4442. 7.62X39 magazine boxes and followers etc are available without scavanging whole rifles.

On another note, for some reason I was playing with a 6.8 AR bolt, and picked up a 357 Sig round and tried it on the bolt face. then I figured out the bolt face is the same, and started thinking about taking a 9MM upper and reaming it to 357 Sig then put in the 6.8 bolt and and....... Darn, another project to play with.

this would work for 40 S&W too, I am not sure what to do for a magazine.

Ruger has made the Hawkeye compact in 6.8 as of now. under 6# with a 16.5" barrel. only blued and walnut for now but if demand for a SS lam vesion persists they may make a run of those.

The .357 Sig was developed from the .40 S&W so the case heads are the same size thus you can swap barrels and maybe recoil springs and then you have a pistol with 2 calibers that use the same magazines.

On the 6.8 bolt, the case head size is .422 the .40 S&W is .424 and the 10 mm is .425 with the .40 you are only .002 over in size, many reloaders use the .40 S&W case holder to load their 6.8 ammo.

These are interesting projects. Please keep us posted how things go. The subject of a LW 6.8 bolt gun has come up numerous times but no one has jumped into the project like you guys are.

The lightweight part is important to me. I'm a fat old man with bad knees and poor eyes, so I dont shoot over 150 yards or so. Don't want to have to drag it that far either!! When I was younger, I would build rifles heavier then heavy, and carry them al over hill and dale. Just don't have that sort of motivation anymore.

I got through to EAA (European American armory) folks to day- ".....We only have enough parts for service on 799's. We are not selling parts only at this time."

I guess it is time to convert the mini to a magazine fed rifle. maybe the AR 6.8 mag? should be more of those.
