Maten build options...

So ive decided to build a longer range semi auto... im going with a maten billet set from mega, magpul prs, night force nxs scope... haven't decided on the power yet... might stay with 25 or bump up to 32... but the caliber is starting to drive me mad.. im stuck between 7mm-08, 6.5 creed, or waiting for a 270-08... i do reload so making my own brass from 308 isnt a huge issue... the 7mm-08 is very temping though... for barrel life and some high bc bullet options. Does anyone here have a 7mm-08 ar and a 6.5? What do you like about each? If Harris puts out a 270-08 i think it will make my mind up for me though lol.

Might be tough finding large frame mega stuff right now.
No direct experience, yet, but have been working through the same decision. After much research and deliberation, here is what I have decided (for now): I'll probably end up with two rifles, one for bench shooting and one for hunting. For my hunting rifle, weight is very important so I plan to go with the 2A Armament Xanthos receiver set and I plan on going with a 7mm-08 barrel as effective hunting ammunition is plentiful (I don't reload yet). For my bench rifle, weight is not really a concern. I've already started that build on an AP M5 receiver set but will likely end up with two uppers: one in .308 (because .308!), and the other will likely end up being a 6.5CM due to the well deserved popularity and I won't mind the weight of the long (e.g., 24") barrels they seem to prefer.

In general, it just seems that 6.5CM is popular with long range (600+ yards) bench shooting and 7mm-08 is a proven hunting round, so decided to just go with the crowd. Was really liking the .260, too, but it seems the market is driving a lot more product development into the 6.5CM these days.

The cartridge isse is really trying me... now im looking into the 284 winchester... such a good 7mm cartridge but the brass availability... i like the 7mm projectiles better than the 6.5... but brass and ammo availability seems more towards the 6.5 cm atm. The 284 seems to be making a bit of a comback from what i can see. If H makes the 270-08 ar 12 or a barrel for an ar 10 i might go that direction... i can form my own brass... use some of my stockpile of 130gr "fused" from american reloading for plinking some burger vlds for long range target and some of yams new bullets for hunting... or just load up some 90g gds to hyper velocity lol. I like the idea of staying with a 6.8 but want a long range target ar i can use for various purposes. Going 7mm is tempting though...

There were zero last week. I see the 284 being a problem on the AR platform with mag length restrictions, it better suited to a long action bolt gun and a few other reasons.

I would say if you want 7mm do a straight 7-08 which will run like a champ, I had s Dpms. Or neck up creedmoor or even 6.5x47, if it were left up to me I would stick with 308 or creedmoor both work well.
So now that I have the MATEN set... I was all set on 7mm-08 since the 270-08 plans took a dive. BUT now I was looking at the MEGA 6.5CM bolt and barrel combo with a guaranteed 1 MOA...They are very nicely priced too... basically both the barrel and the bolt for the price of a BHW barrel... So my question to some of you 7mm-08 owners out there... since the ASC mags can be loaded out to 2.86... does this make a huge difference in your velocities? (if you load out that far) I can see 150gr accubond LR with an over .6BC possibly reaching 2800 fps in a 22" barrel vs 140 reaching that in a 6.5CM...That would be a great 1000 yard target round and a great longer (400+) yard hunting round. Im in no hurry... just about to get the barrel ordered.. might put that off and get other components... I just don't have any experience with 7mm-08 or 6.5cm.. I do have a TON of IMR 4166 and that seems to do well in 7mm-08...
