Well,
I played with a Prismatic yesterday and thought it was neat. I couldn't find anything about the battery on the website so I emailed Leupold for more info. Thought others might be curious too:

"The illuminated reticle scopes use a long lasting 3 volt 1/3 N lithium battery that is replaceable in the field without the need for tools.

Duracell - DL1/3N
Eveready - 2L76
Kodak - K58L
Varta - CR1/3N
Sanyo - CR1/3N

The battery life of the Leupold Prismatic scopes:
No loss of illumination at ambient 70 degrees Fahrenheit at the maximum intensity setting for 10 hours.
No loss of illumination at maximum intensity setting at minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit for 4 hours."

Those scopes are pretty neat, but they were made by request of some Police Departments that wanted an etched reticle instead of an Aimpoint or EOTech because they didn't want an optic that relied on batteries. I would get an Aimpoint or EOTech any day over the Prismatic.

Yep I gotta agree. I OWN an Aimpoint M4s, an Aimpoint M3 (both 2MOA) AND the Leupold Prismatic. The prismatic usually lives on my Saiga 12 but just recently it had to go back to Leupold to get the reticule straightened out.

If I had not picked up the prismatic cheap I would not own one. For my uses it is not compatible with Night vision whatsoever nor any magnifiers so that is two strikes there. It's big plus on the shotgun though is it's reticule. I sight the center dot in for slugs and them use the outside ring for Bird and Buck shot.

So in closing unless you can get a HELL of a deal on a prismatic and are planing on using it ONLY in the day without any kind a 3X or 4X magnifier, I would pass.

Good advice. I noticed that they are available for $439. Inside the store I found it hard to see the reticle without powering it on. But for me the battery life is too short to compete against an Aimpoint or EOTech.
Neat though.

Your right it is a neat idea. In all honesty in day use the reticule isn't bad to pick up and I have never fired a round down range with the reticule illuminated. At night the lowest setting is awfully bright and COMPLETELY unusable with Night Vision. Again, neat idea but as a direct competition to the Aimpoint or Eotech they came up short.

I have used mine in front of a Gen2+ monocular and, as stated above, it really is too bright for NVD's even on the lowest setting.

With that said, I was playing with my Prismatic recently and found that the battery was nearly dead after sitting unused in the safe for ~ a year. This made the sight extremely dim on the lowest setting and makes it work fairly well with my monocular. It is still a bit too bright but the reticle is crisp and distinct through the NV and is much cleaner than the Aimpoint dot that usually rides on the rifle.

Too bad Leupold doesn't take another look at the Prismatic. I think if they could make a Gen2 version that's just a bit lighter and has a tactile dial rather than the push button brightness settings they'd have a very useful and unique optic. Add a couple night vision settings and I think they'd have a winner.
