I'm looking to optic-ize my new 6.8 upper. I want a low-variable scope for close-medium range. I'm thinking the VX-II 1-4x20 would be a nice fit. (What I really want is the Trijicon Accupoint 1-4x24, but $$$!!). Now for the question... the VX-II is about $300. What useful improvements does Leupold add to the Mark 2 1.5-5x20 to jump the price to $430. I know they advertise coatings and all that, but will a hunter/casual shooter gain anything from the step up?

Either way, it'll rest in a LaRue mount.

Nobody knows what makes the Mark 2 more than the VX-II? I guess I'll get the VX-II then!

You'll be happy with the VXII. I have several, one 2x7, one 3x9 tactical, the other 3 are just regular 3x9 VXII's. I also have 2 Bushnells, one 4x16AO 4200 and a 3x9 3200. I like the Leopolds a lot better than the Bushnells although the AO on the 4200 is nice. The Leoplolds are clearer with less distortion and transmit light better early and late in the day. Plus they have a life time warrenty! I plan on getting another Leopold for my 6.8, when I eventually get it from RRArms... I too am looking at the 1x4 VXII for the 6.8 but haven't decided as yet. The new Leopold Prismatic look like it would work out good on the 6.8 AR platform but I haven't actually seen one yet. I like a 'cross hair' for hunting and shooting better than a 'red dot'. A big plus IMHO is the Leopold isn't battery dependent as are Aimpoints and EOtecs, one less thing to worry about. I know this didn't answer your question about the differences between the M-2 and the VXII but maybe it helped.

There is minimal difference. I've tested 100s of leupolds. They are all very good. You gain a little low light performance with the coating and maybe some contrast. Not enough to notice. I'm friends with a Leupold vp, he is in Australia on business or I would give him a call for you. I play with all kinds of Leupold toys. Prototypes and preruns. They all are very clear. I can't think of a reason why you should go with the mkII. The mk4s have beafier adjustment mechanisms and are tested to great lengths for durability. Same glass as lower models though. The VXII I believe is the old VXIII and they've improved on the New VXIII this year. Don't know if this helps any? Leupolds are great. You can't go wrong with one.
