The problem is that it takes a certain velocity to penetrate body armor. That is the whole point of this project. Sometimes, 100fps makes all the difference.

Yes. Today I came across a post that noted that the current 7.62 AP M993 (tungsten core) requires over 2850 fpm to have a good chance of penetrating Level IV armor. That is more or less muzzle velocity from a 16" barrel. This is almost certainly with the bullet at zero yaw. The zero yaw part is important since it typically takes well over 100 yards for bullets to "go to sleep" and stop wobbling about. I seem to recall that some old military texts said that maximum penetration of standard bullets into sandbags is at something like 200 yards for that reason (my memory is not the best, though).

Here is a video in which M993 did NOT penetrate Level IV at just 45 feet from a 16 inch barrel. MV 2849 fps.
