Not sure which way to go with spending a bit of cash on my addiction. Do I go with an old dream of an M1 Garand finally, or take the money and finish off all but one other weapon in my collection? They can all fire, I'm just looking at setting them up more to how I want them (Trij Doctor on the Mossberg 590, bevelled mag well on the Kimber, a few more mags for the weapons that I only have 3 mags a piece for, upgraded SSS springs for my Stag and maybe a different optic, then with any leftover cash going for ammo). Really torn, and have no idea which way to go... I like to think its easier to save up to get the little stuff later on, rather than the cash for a rifle.

Get the Garand. The first reason is its better to have more firearms now just in case the government does something dumb. Accessories will always be made and you shouldn't have a problem buying them. Plus it is easier to save for the little stuff. The second reason depends on what your getting. A new garand or a collectible piece. The latter will always get harder and harder to find.

Hey, your still around! Haven't seen you in a few... Got the knife! Sweet!!! Thanks! Anyhow, that's been my thinking too, its an original that's been refurbed by James River Armory. The problem is that I've been looking at finishing these weapons for several years now, and it never seems to happen!

I agree, get the Garand. As sweet a shooting rifle as there is. Not only that but it has to be the softest recoiling 06 in the world.

Alright now son, you need to learn some discipline and select one of your other guns to finish. Set them up in priority and get your priorities straight. Of course you will need to add some clips for the Garand to that list. :D :D :D

Yup and Equalizer is right on the priority list. If your like me it gets put off because there is too much to do! The last few years I've started trying to prioritize but I've found I start the list by whichever piece I find first. Then I dedicate all my searching and saving to that one.

And of course I'm still here. Damn I love this place. Just been busy ruining parts in the shop for the last week!

Definitely, get the Garand, even the youngest ones are nearly 60 years old and getting snapped up by collectors, they won't be easy to find too much longer. Original bayonets are really getting pricy, as are NM sights. The newly manufactured versions are not the same, BTW. So go for it and own a real piece of history (and one of the sweetest triggers ever made in a battle rifle).

Some advice if you do get the Garand - don't shoot hot .30-06 loads in it. Though the receiver is more than up to anything stuffed in an '06 case, the op rod is not. Use loads at M2 ball pressures only. At best you can bend the op rod, at worst, the bolt lug can shear off and you might just end up wearing the op rod as an implant. There are aftermarket gas plugs available that let you tune for hotter loads, but IMO, you're better off just sticking to original spec ammo. Besides, that 150gr. slug @ 2750f/s (or 168gr @ 2650f/s) will get the job done as far as you can accurately shoot.

BTW - it is easy to identify a Garand newbie by their discolored right thumbnail (aka M1 Thumb). Trust me, it only takes one time to motivate you to learn the proper way to load a Garand...

I would get the firearm. In my opinion, guns tend to appreciate in value over time, where as accessories do not, at least most of them. To me the key to buying accessories is shopping around and buying as much from one place as possible to save on shipping.

Definitely get the Garand...!!!

You should have been with me the past two days...

Kathy and I made a Banzai 17 hr run to Anniston GA to the CMP where Wednesday morning we picked up 5 Field Grade Garands...5 barreled receivers and 10 cases of HXP Greek 30/06 M2 ammo. The 5 hand picked Garands were graded WAY below actual condition. All five were arsenal rebuilds with near 100% finish and bore erosion readings under 3. The stocks were fair to very good. A STEAL for $495 each. The barreled receivers were only $125 each...

You will not regret it.

Go to www.ODCMP.com for details.

Obama could shut down the CMP at any time with an EO and put Capt Crunch back to work.

Sweet! Reminds me of the trip I took with a coworker a couple years ago. Seems we had this meeting with Honda in Lincoln, AL to inspect some of our parts - the meeting took all of 2 hours, the next 4 hours were spent at the CMP store gauging M1s. We made it back to Dyersburg that night with 5 M1s, an '03, a Kimber .22, and a bunch of ammo. Best part was being paid $.46/mile to drive there and back.

Get the Garand!

I have two DCM/CMP garands from back when they were $330 ea.

I love them dearly.

LOADING!...

use your hand in blade formation holding 8 rnd clip with thumb ( think salute with clip between thumb and palm ), Use the edge of your hand to hold op rod back, wile pushing the clip in. continue pushing the clip down FIRMLY untill you are ready for the bolt to slam forward. When ready, yank hand back toward your face. The instant your thumb pressure comes off the clib, the bolt will start forward. Unless your gun is binding that is.

Watch Saving Private Ryan closely & you will see that many extras have a black & blue thumb! Hmmm... I guess Col. Dale Dye ( the tech consultant ) didn't warn them or train them on how to load & NOT load an M1. Maybe he didn't have much experience with them himself. My father was a firearms training instructor during Korean war. When he saw me unpack my beautiful Springfield Armory parts correct WWII era rifle He started drilling me in proper loading technique, before I even got the cosmoline off it. :)

Well guys, I ran up to the Chantilly Gun Show today, and I finally got my Garand from James River Armory. Springfield Armory, refinished To "Arsenal Reissue" condition. New Stock Set, reparkerized in correct finish, properly cartouched to match serial number, new butt plate, head space guaged, all critical areas inspected, and a new Krieger Barrel. The serial number puts the receiver from July of 1941. She's a real looker, and I felt like a proud parent walking around the show with her slung over my shoulder! Thanks for your advice guys!

GET THE...oh ok too late :D!

I was going to say get the gun you always WANTED! And GET THE GARAND! And the usual reasons why its good. But mostly get the thing you WANT when you can get it...I missed a chance to get a gun I wanted once...and regretted it dearly for a long while. Next time I had a chance to get it, I GOT IT!

O.K. that is funny Rugerite. Where is the owl when you need him?

dude! get a garand for 400 and dump the cash you got left for a 80 dollar replica doc sight. you can get mag extensions for your kimber that are beveled and are low cost. theres ways around spending tons of money
I agree.Sometimes paying a premium is a necessity like optics, barrels and triggers. but some things (most things actually), good enough is just good enough. :D

and BTW I see you joined us recently. Welcome to the freak show.
