So I'm thinking about getting my first handgun, but I don't want to spend a small fortune on one since money is tight. I went to the local fun shop and told them what I had in mind and how much I want to spend, and was pretty much left with Glock. He told that they are hard to find right now but they just got a couple used ones in (G-19 and G-26) that they need to inspect and to call back in a couple of days for a price. FYI, The shop warranties their used guns for one year.

So if you were in my shoes, would you buy a used Glock? I'm open to suggestions, but I really don't want to spend much more than $600.

I have owned Glocks in model 21, 19 and still own a Glock 17. They are very reliable guns but they do not fit me well.

Recently I stumbled across the Taurus 24/7 and fell in love. They fit me like a glove. They are VERY accurate out of the box. They are reliable in 9mm and .40 S&W. The .45 ACP had magazine issues with the early versions. They can be found for $375 right now.

Some turn their noses up at Taurus...but they are gaining a reputation for reliability and developing a strong following.

I now have three and can recommend them highly. They are an excellent value.

I wouldnt hesitate to buy a used glock. They will hold their value, and are about as reliable as you can get out of a pistol. But like Owenslee said, the 24/7 is a good line also. I helped a female friend pick one out last week, we havent shot it yet, but it had a solid feel. One advantage the glock has over the Taurus is the ease to disassemble

I would also buy a Glock used especially with what they are offering as far as thein house warranty. I have a G21 sf now and have owned others. I like the looks of the Taurus 24/7 also but haven't had time to play with them. One other option is th xd's that can be had for the same price. They are getting a big following easy to assemble and diassemble same prices as the glocks. They have the grip safety also so one extra safety. I have the tactical 9mm and am making it my comp gun. I like the feel more than the glocks and I prefer the steel mags versus the composite one's That is just a personal preferance. Just another idea to confuse you with.

I shoot a glock 34 alot. I'm actually training for production steel matches with it. It used to be my night stand gun. I have now switched to a Springfield XDm 9mm for self defense. I've been shooting it since February. I've got about 3000 round through it with no malfunctions at all. They are a little easier to find than glocks. I think it in 40 cal would be a great gun.

Brad,

They are not that hard to find if you have an FFL that is willing to do a transfer from another dealer. Elmore's Firearms in Indiana has 14 Glocks in stock (http://www.elmoresfirearms.com/) as of yesterday; my local Cabellas has at least a dozen, and they pop up on Gunbroker every day.

This morning I literally just won a Glock 19, NIB, with 3 hi-cap magazines and Trijicon night sights for $540 delivered (on Gunbroker). Others like this have sold in auctions from $520 to $620, so I got a little lucky on the price, but availability is out there.

For my money, best handguns in the world.

Glocks are good to go.

Smith and Wesson M&P's can be had for reasonable prices also.

Springfield XD's.

Some offer package deals where you get extra mags or rebates that you can figure into the purchase price.

I don't have any experience with the Taurus, but it looks good for the price.

Thanks for the input guys. One other thing that concerns me about other handguns is the availability of replacement parts. From what I understand it is much easier to get parts for Glock's than it is for some of the other brands out there.

I was originally thinking about an XD, but haven't researched them a whole lot. Maybe it's about time I do just that!

There are all kinds of places to get upgrade and replacement parts for the Glocks. That said the same is becoming true for the xd's. Since Springfield is U.S. based you can have better availability to factory parts as well. After saying that Glock has made sure to keep there parts available also. Taurus from what I understand is good with availability of factory parts still some companies are lagging making upgrade parts. That's not to say it won't happen as they become more popular. It really is going to come down to what you like.
Is there any gun ranges that rent guns so you can shoot them side by side?

I've owned several Glocks and sold all of them over the years except for my G-19. They are definitely GTG, especially in 9mm.

The hype would suggest that all of them will feed everything and run flawlessly in spite of any conditions but I've had a couple that wouldn't reliably feed hollow points.

That being said, even though it's a bit too big for my hands, I'll never part with the G-19 I have since it always goes bang when it should and so far, has never gone bang when it shouldn't. I'd definitely buy one used, especially if they're trade ins. They are pretty durable and there isn't much that can go wrong with them. If it does, you can fix most everything with a fairly low level of gunsmithing skill. The number of accessories available for them are huge and generally inexpensive which really adds to the value.

The G-19 is a real standout in my mind. With one in the chamber that's 16 rounds of 9 mm love in a package small enough for concealed carry. Even though I've moved on to the Walther P99 platform, I still love my G-19!

I'd bet my life on a Glock.

I can't recommend them more. My G23 went more than 5000 rounds before I cleaned it the first time. It went out of the box, into a training course without even a wipe down.

I now carry a G19 and my "bump in the night" gun is a G34.

I want to buy another G19. Two is one, one is none and all that.

Parts will never be a problem.

Glock is the standard against which all others are measured and there's a reason for that.

The XD isn't a bad gun, neither is the M&P series.

Run far far away from Taurus.

+1 on the used Glock. As long as it's not some torture test leftover that is.

I've got 2, a model 31 (.357sig) and 20 (10mm) both w/night sights and one with the Laser Max guide rod laser installed.
I've had the 31 for about 9 years and the 20 for a little over 1, virtually flawless operation out of both of them. After careful inspection, I wouldn't let a "used" tag on a Glock dissuade me at all from purchasing it.

I have handguns from other manufacturer's and like them all but somehow, whenever I get handgun recommendation questions, "Glock" always seems to come out of my mouth first.

Get the Glock 19, it's one of their best guns. Parts are cheap and the guns are simple and easy to work on. Make sure you have enough mags and replace the recoil spring every few thousand rounds and it will run fine.

I will second the glock...

I have used the 19 at work and it works every time... if the mags have a number 5 follower they should work with hollow points.

I here the tauras is pretty heavy.

..for me i like the convience the glock 18.

i kid, i kid.. but I do have a glock 23 .40 and the thing is a monster, she fits in my hands well and never fails. I bought it used from a retired PD, it had holster wear and he gave me 4 mags all dusty and fully loaded. The thing looked like it had been maintained by a cop, dirty. BUT I took it out and fired the hell out of it the first day no cleaning and no fails.

used glock? GTG

Be advised...My two 9mm 24/7' Pro's unloaded are lighter than my unloaded 1st Gen Mod 17 Glock.

I agree that buying a used Glock is a non issue and they are very reliable. I can't say the same for factory Glock mags. I have multiple factory 9mm and .45 mags that were left loaded and have cracked through the rear loaded indicator holes. The mags have bulged to the point that they had to be forced into the mag well and were then very difficult to remove.
Photos on request...

When I contacted Glock, they were willing to replace the mag bodies for $39 each. More $$$ than I can buy complete new factory mags for.

The gun itself is the standard for reliability. I suspect it would still have functioned fine with the cracked mags.
