Well, we put up a feeder last weekend and my brother went to the lease yesterday, the lease is just outside of Columbus and there has been no hunting on or around it... I didn't really expect to see any action yet

front feeder in the field

game trail and a mineral lick I put in

stock tank, just dug a hole and filled with corn and spread some out

looks like we have some potential

no hogs on cams yet..
need to put out 2 more feeders

considering we are in a drought and there has been no supplmental feeding, I think with some rain, corn, protein and mineral licks and careful management, we can have some decent bucks

and I like to think there's a few really nice ones out there lurking in the shadows

We had a bad drought here in '98. The deer looked similar back then. Had herds of about 40 wandering around the property looking for food, they'd come up to us hoping we had food (or maybe that we were edible). We didn't hunt that year and spent the time until the acorns fell feeding them corn.

There's a few good racks in those shots. Hopefully they'll fill out well in the next few months.

I wonder if protein feed started this late would be of any benefit for this season (starts Nov 7)
my gut tells me know.. but, I have never been involved with supplemental feedings, every buck I have shot has been low fence, no feeding.. like this one from South Texas a few years ago

SUpplimental feed should do them pretty well. I can't say it will really fatten them up for winter, but I only know of my own experience and it was an extreme one. We were more worried about them dying off from starving than getting their bulk up. Yours don't seem to be too bad off (I only say because they've not gathered into big herds from the look of the pics).

Good looking bucks from the game cam. I don't know if supplement feeding them would be worth it. The majority of the good size deer in this neck of the woods have no problem finding food. That and it's illegal to do up here.

From yuor pictures, I wouldn't be worried about it. They look to be solid animals.

if your looking for antler growth the protein would not be worth it this late... most of the antler development and growth is finished by now. it could help the overall healthiness of the deer. if you are looking for a boost in antler growth the protein needs to be out in march/april until about now.

yeah, I don't think protein would do much good at this stage of the game

we aren't big on hunting deer over a feeder
now, getting them coming or going is different and hunting hogs over a feeder we are 100% ok with

camera is a D40

another shot I forgot to load up
some cull bucks

One of my favorites...

The following is one of my favorite game camera pictures because the buck appears to be posing for the picture. This was taken 2 seasons ago with a Leaf River Infrared.

I saw this buck several times, but he was always just out of bow range. I have 5 cameras scattered throughout where I hunt. I don't have any pictures of this buck eating corn from under a feeder, but do have several pictures of him eating corn that was just poured on the ground. Not conclusive evidence that he would not eat from under a feeder, but makes me wonder.

nice buck!
I am not a fan of hunting deer under a feeder personally
hogs? SURE!

I want feeders to draw them in and take em coming or going, but not just sitting 75 yards out

Feeders are good 20 yard markers for bowhunting...

It doesn't bother me to take one over a feeder. As a matter of fact, it allows me to wait for the perfect broad side shot. I have a feeder at 20 yards from every stand as a distance marker for the kids. This is a picture of my daughter from last year all decked out in her Lady Dream Season carbons.

I am not near as mad at the deer as I used to be. I get most of my enjoyment watching the kids get excited when they take a deer.

that's AWESOME!
I should add for bow hunting, I have no problems over a feeder

congrats on your daughter getting one!

mine is 3, we have deer in the field behind us (live IN Austin) and yesterday evening we were watching them and she was saying "I want to shoot the deer, they are yummy in my tummy!"

her BIG bro is 12 and has taken 3
my 5 year old son is ready too!

I've never been much for feeders. If I had to rely on velison for food I'd not feel bad about taking one at a feeder, but I hunt for sport and supplimental food (I've always found wild game to be enormously more healthy than anything store bought). With that outlook, I can't justify to myself hunting an animal that is not necessary for my survival and baiting it in. I tend to track and scout to find the best places to sit and hunt (and last year was the first we've used cameras, not as much free time as in the past).

I need to pull my camera and see if it has picked anything up, we dont have nearly the deer concentration you do but the expanded archery season starts in a couple of weeks so if I amgoing to be stuck at home anyways might as well try to put some venision in the freezer.

I am hoping we have some grandpas out there that are reluctant to go in the feeder pins (got cows on the place so we have them blocked with barbed wire)

To be honest I have no issues arrowing a doe for the freezer besides where I am hunting they want you to kill the does for pop managment....

I agree 100%
can't eat the horns!

my landowner is a bit old school when it comes to does and doesn't want any shot
hopefully we can change that
oddly, there seems to be more bucks than does on camera

I have access to a buddies place that is literally over run with does
we get to go there every year and take all we want
