Checking AR Performance for their barrels. The 16 inch barrel and bolt is what I'll likely go with. Although the 18 inch barrel from WOA intrests me too. It will be used for a deer rifle in Western Oregon mostly. Not new to AR's, just new to building them.

It will have a free float Larue rail system and low profile gas block. I'm going to mount a scope on it for most of my shooting and have to be determined BUIS front and rear.

I have a complete lower, a BCM upper reciever and a bolt carrier for the project so far. The rest of the parts I'm still shopping for. Any comments, suggstions and pointers about pulling this off are welcome. I want to make sure I get the right parts for the right job.

I've been doing a lot of research on this site, but still throwing this out there in case I might have missed something in my searches.

Thanks. I like this forum.

Welcom aboard! Sounds like you have a good list started. Don't forget mags, I prefer the PRI especially if you roll your own. I would recomend AR Performance's 16" barrel, just don't let H know you plan on using a Larue rail with it :D. If you are looking for 18" barrels I think Ben at Bison Armory has some coming in, I don't know how long before H get's any in.

"Roll your own" LOL

Welcome aboard.

I know WOA barrels and specs changed for the better since I purchased mine in September 08.
Cant go wrong there. Also Bison armory is gtg for what you need and ARperformance pretty much defines it.
You will get about 50fps difference give or take , between the 16" and 18" and about 100fps from 16" to 20"....
Of course this will give you the option of a mid or rifle length gas system. If you go rifle lenght, I would mirror that with the buffer set-up. I run a rifle buffer set up on 6.8 with a mid length gas system... I use a standard rifle buffer and the sss spring. It took no tuning and has remained consistent.
What muzzle device are you looking into?
Have you got a line on ammo?
Have you decided on wether you are going to run a CAR buffer set-up or Rifle buffer set-up???
I would definately invest in a superior shooting systems flatwire chrome silicone buffer spring.

I do roll my own. I'll start out buying about 200 rounds and then reload from there. SSA seems to be the place to get your initial basic load. Hadn't put much thought into buffer spring yet. Really looking hard at WOA 16 inch w/mid length gas system today. I keep changing my mind still. Can't put in an order until the 15th. I'll have the money set aside then.

Wife blew my gun money on a car repair! Can you believe that? $450 bucks for a timing chain cover gasket on a 96 Bronco. Work I could of done myself, but I'm not home right now. I guess its justified.

I've got plenty of time though. It'll be April before I get back from Iraq and finally retire from this Army National Guard thing. Intend to do a lot of hunting and try my hand at some shooting competitions with the M1A that I've owned for several years now.

-So lets assume I'm going to use a 16" barrel with a mid length gas system on a rifle that will be used primarily for deer hunting blacktail in the woods of NW Oregon where the shots are almost always within 200 meters or less.

-The bolt carrier is a heavier auto type carrier from BCM. The weapon is not auto(of couse). All NFA rules apply. :)

-The upper is BCM.

-DPMS parts kit in an American Spirit lower reciever with a Tapco collapsible stock kit with the buffer and spring that came with it. Probably will get a different stock eventually. Need new spring and buffer? What to get?

-The flash suppresser is likely a Vortex or a Phantom. Still on the fence. I figured out that I need one dedicated to 6.8 or .308 and with the threading to match the barrel, Correct? 5/8thx24 I think? One for 5.56 will not do.

-It will have a low profile gas block with a rail system long enough to just cover it. Any recommendations on gas blocks?

Thanks for the welcome and the replies. Nice place you got here.

Since your going to be hunting with the rifle check out the WOA tuned RRA 2 stage trigger. For the price it is a good choice. Check into a JP adjustable gas block so you can fine tune the gas system if need be.

YHM Low pro Gas block should work sufficiently. Also, 5/8X24 is correct on the flash hider. The .223 ones could cause a booboo
