Gas Wood Machine Auto part Metal
Gas Telephone Wood Strap Metal

Been getting some pierced primers with "custom" ammo. None with factory loads..also some failure to fire with all. Noticed the firing pin hole in my bolt is not perfectly circular. Do you think this could be the source. See compared to my 5.56 bolt.

Certain custom ammunition could be using the incorrect primer for the power level of the load. I have seen 5.56 loads well under max powder charge pierce primers so there can be all kinds of variables. The 5.56 issue I refer to seems to be specific to this rifle.

Which one of the cases is the one that is having the pierced primers? The one on the left?

Note, you will need to take the BCG apart and clean out the primer chips behind the bolt.

I do not think that custom ammo shops would risk using pistol primers in rifle ammo. Quality ammo is what keeps them in business. However, with the shortage of primers on the market, I heard some shops did load 6.8mm ammo with non-magnum primers which are a few thou thinner but still work ok in 6.8mm cases if not loaded hot. Some rifles shoot the same ammo at higher pressure depending on their specific chamber. I had a 6.8 barrel with a shorter freebore pierce primers with handloads that worked just fine and without pressure signs in my other 6.8 barrels. I even had one with a rather long freebore but also a longer chamber by 0.008" that also pierced primers in loads that worked fine in 3 other 6.8 barrels.

Equalizer_2, you said it well. I've been gone for a week+ and didn't read back far enough.
