Finally made my mind up...

I'm terrible at making decisions sometimes. After a loooong and over-analyzed process I have decided to commit to the 6.8 over other calibers (6x45, .25-45, 6.5 Grendel). I already have rifles chambered in 5.56 and 300BO (not overly impressed with the Blackout). I am placing the order for my barrel and BCG today to start my build and want some advice on barrel length. My main objective will be for whitetail with some coyote hunting mixed in. Is there much of an advantage going with the 18" over the 16"? Also wanted some input on amm choices. I am set up to reload. Thanks

Now you gone and done it! Be sure to clean your other rifles real good, give them a generous wipedown of oil, and retire them to the back of the safe.

I started with an 18" and later went to a 16". I don't think the extra 2" of length give any appreciable benefit in performance, and is an aesthetic/personal preference choice.

Yeah man I am the type that usually does research until I thoroughly confuse myself and can't make my dang mind up. I was close to going with the 6.8 a while ago but for whatever reason I never followed through. This time I'm set. I've looked at a couple different suppliers for the barrel and other components. Is there anyone you would prefer over others?

stick to one of the forum sponsors for barrel and you cant go wrong. I'm biased towards bison but everyone has their preference.

go with 16"
ARP barrels are very good quality and very affordable. A lot of the members here are very pleased with the quality and especially the customer service.
16" is best for carry and especially if you plan on adding a suppressor later. 18" will give you about 100fps more velocity over 16"...which is negligible unless you plan on shooting over 300 yards regularly.
Welcome to the 68 community.
ARP All the way. But? What type of terrain? Wide open prairie? Dense under growth in heavy forest?
I love my 6.8 for the under 300 yard shots here on the west coast but will not travel out of state without an LR rifle (270 wsm or 6.5 cm) as it sucks to have to sit and drool when a trophy is sitting at 700 yards and you do not have an ethical shot. I happen to be shooting an Accurized Ruger Ranch 6.8 this season.
ARP barrels are some of the best out there. I have 3 built and another 5 in the drawer.

I'm in VA so not a lot of wide open country. We've got some cutovers on the property but most of my stands are over food plots with the longest shot being under 200 yards. Fairly flat with a couple rolling hills. When I predator hunt I usually hit our hayfields and pastures which are a lot more expansive of course.
I also was not impressed with the 300bo so it got sold for my first 6.8, and I haven't looked back. The 300bo is a tacticool fan boy round that under performs. I have a Noveske barrel and an arp barrel and I am very happy with both. No need to go longer than 16". As for ammo I'd be scooping up some 110gr accubonds (or 100gr, my personal choice in my short barrels) while they are still available. Otherwise the 120gr hornady sst's are a great alternative or the 95gr Barnes ttsx.

I went through the same thing before I decided on the 6.8 and I'm positive I made the right choice. My first (notice I said first? :p) 6.8 is just a 16 inch Stag upper on a Anderson lower, Nothing special but it shoots great and has been trouble free. I'm saving up my pennies for another upper from ARP or Bison and it will be 16 inch as well since I intend to use a suppressor on it and my longest shot is 200 yards.

Mine is for deer and 'yotes too. I'm stocked up on 90 grain Gold Dots and 120 grain SST bullets mainly for deer and I have Speer 90 grain TNT HP's ordered especially for Coyotes although I'm sure the Gold Dots would work well on them too.
any preference on flash hider or brake?

Finishing up my order list now and I'm left with the flash hider. Looking for preferences. Looking at the Vortex from ARP to keep everything coming from same place. Thanks.

Depends on what you plan to use your rifle for.
Vortex or shorty from ARP should do,you fine while hunting
Howdy

I have both a 18" and 16" ARP barrelled rifles.

I prefer the 18" for most of my hunting, just like you, in brush country with 200 yd max shots. It is a target crowned barrel and will shoot lights out. It will yield a bit more velocity and without the muzzle break it is quieter!

The 16" is a good all around barrel length. I use mine when walking/stalking mainly. It's set up for quick shots with a 1-4x scope.

You can't go wrong with either.
I as well have a 16 and 18 in, both ARP barrels. The 18in is setup for hunting fields with a 3-9 Vortex and a 3lb Timney. The 16in is setup for driving or stalking and wears a 1-6 Strike Eagle and a 4.5lb POF trigger. I went with linear comps on both, one is a JAL the other a KVP. And I'm glad I did, when my 13 year old shot her 9pt last season, she had to shoot out the side window of the box stand facing backward, and the muzzle was only about 18in from my head. My ears rang for several minutes but not nearly as bad as a brake would have been.

quick question...

Do you all know if ARP does anything for active LE or military? Thanks.
