I've seen the "slick side" uppers around by Les Baer. I'm thinking about piecing together a pistol AR in 6.8. I'll probably just make it a right handed upper, but since I'm a lefty, I didn't want the forward assist jabbing me when I carried it. Anybody give me the pros and cons, or flat out opinions, about not having the forward assist on an AR? Thanks!

I like the forward assist if you are going to do brass checks and such, I guess you could use your thumb and push on the notch in the bolt carrier (which is what it was designed for) but I have never used it.....

The original AR didn't have one and most other gas guns do not. The main neg is not being able to chamber quietly or do a chamber check without cycling a new round in. The main intent for why they wanted it is so a person could force a round to chamber/. That idea was seriously flawed as it would likely jam the gun up completely and not working.

Without one woudl allow you to use any carrier. FYI LesBaer are made by Young and sold at a markup. I would get a Young NM lite instead if you want a light one or the M16 NM if you want heavy. Also look at the JP ones as their cold quelched burnished and hand rubbed finish is awesome. Have you thought of the side charge uppers
