the Faukers had moved to their winter grounds so no trophy mulie for me, this is a 5x meat elk taken with the 6.8 shown at 372yds.
He looked around unsure of what had happened took a few steps and stumbled, got back to his feet took 6-7 steps and crumpled, slid about 30ft to the edge of a 50ft cliff. His body is between his rack and I had to cut 2 quarters off to move him.
2nd pic the view from above timberline. ETA- 110gr Accubond at 2880fps, same 20" 13 twist 3 groove that I took to HTRs to hog hunt with. Yeah I know the 13 twist shouldn't work in cold weather or high altitude(11400ft), tell the bull that

AWESOME!!!!!!!

It didn't register what you were saying when you told me earlier.

SWEET!!!!!

Almost 400 yards with a 20" 6.8 Hmmmmmm

It was the 2880 FPS Load which was probably 2850 fps in that cold?

11150 wow you were sucking thin air weren't you

You had a 200 yard zero correct? 200yds is my short range zero, I always use a 300 Z for deer, elk and antelope.

What was the come up for that shot? 17" or 4.5 MOA with a 300 Z I held 1/2 mil high apx 7"

Where did you hit him? I am guessing just behind the shoulder quartering away given the blood streaming from the nostrils
only slight quarter away, went in behind shoulder, stopped inside far shoulder.

How far off was the POA/POIwith in a few inches nothing to really aim at and they are 24" + top to bottom

You know ART is going to want that on the site for sure

Once you get me the number etc if its OK with you I will post it over on ARFCOM since some over there don't play nice with you. :p

We don't need no stinken 6.5G

Why would anyone want to dope more drop when you can use the flatter shooting higher vel higher engery 6.8.

Its all in fun

Obviously, since the bull did not go very far, the accubond performed well. Did the accubond leave a good exit wound? Just curious because they dont always fall dead in their tracks.
His left front leg was forward which opened up the heart area so the bullet went behind the left at mid section and shattered the right shoulder. I just quarter and debone to pack out on horses, never gut or look inside the body cavity, just too much work.
he did gurgle when I rolled him so I think it was pretty messy in there.

Must be nice to have the mountains not too far away. That scenery shot told the whole story.

Good hunt Constructor.

I could just sit on that mountain and watch the view (the mountain view, not the tv show ;) ) for a while. If it was a morning hunt, I'd love to open up the coffee thermos while sitting up there. An evening hunt, and a cold brew would be nice.

How far did you ride the horses in? I'd have to rent a CH47 Chinook to drop me off and pick me up. Horses and I don't get along. There is a reason why man invented the internal combustion engine. :p
We rode in apx 14 miles, took 3-1/2 hrs to base camp then 2 hrs on foot to get above timberline, we thought about a chopper which would have been faster and cheaper but they can't land in a wilderness area and there is something in the regs about hunting after a flight in.

This is really an archery area, by gun season most of the game has headed to lower areas. during the summer and early fall there are hundreds of elk roaming that valley. There is good trout fishing 50yds from the camp too.

Very Nice Job Constructor.

In Colorado I assume. Tent camping? Steaks on the fire? - the Best.

Prone shot?he was above and behind me so it was off my knee

About how COLD was it at the shot?  high 30s

I'm seeing 15F Lows to 52F Highs around Colorado today.
we had a cold front move in Tues. night that dropped temps apx 15 degrees
we were really lucky on the weather 28-45 most days

I think I forgot to mention we saw 4 -3/4 curl rams, and a coyote as big as a wolf but my partner couldn't get a shot off.
Alot of junk on Arfcom, they don't know the story. I've been hunting this big buck, we estimate close to a 36" spread and very heavy beams, for 4 years, it took 3 to draw this tag.
Last time I was there I had a muzzle loader, so I restricted myself to shots less than 200. This is a wise old buck that acts like a white tail. I had sighted him under a juniper bush so I came in from above to apx 30 yards but had lost track of him, when I saw him he was still 30 yards looking at me. He layed his head flat on the ground in the 18" high oakbrush out of sight. I was throwing rocks at him for 20 minutes, I'm sure I hit him a few times but he would not get up so I walked to him kicking the oakbrush, at about 5 yards he jumped straight up and landed about 40 ft down the hill in a dead run. When he came into sight he was apx 75 yds, he paused for a second and I shot and missed. While I loaded my muzzle loader for 5 minutes I watched him run about a mile around timberline. I said then the next time I hunt "Grandfauker" it will be with a semi auto.
That is why I had a 6.8, I felt more comforable with the way it shot than my 308s or 25 wssm. The 6.5 Reaper was to heavy to drag to 11000 ft and I had a project going with that upper anyway.
I put 10 shots in a 5 in circle at 464 yards a week earlier with less drop and drift than my 308 so I knew the 6.8 would work just fine.

Constructor,

Here is a link over on thehighroad.org that is talking about using the 6.8 for hunting. I thought you might want to share your elk pictures and experience there...

Take care,

Yeah, I've seen stupid post from krocus and jerkface on several forums, spreading their vast knowledge as fast as they can
